its been a bad week for us.little nitro went back the the hospital for 7 days.i got him back last thursday evening.he was doing pretty good eating a can of food a day.well the other day he started to drool and looked like he had the hic-ups.but yesterday he was drooling bad and was coughing with a nasty noise.when we woke up this morning he looked terrible .my wife took him to the hospital at 7 am.i was working in the area of the hospital .when i got in my truck there was a message.it was my wife crying and telling me to call her right away.i knew already.we had to put him to sleep.the doctor said after a couple tests that nitro's immune system was almost non existent and he had no chance to fight on.i am sick to my stomach.apparently the first vet didnt run the stool test like they should have and after going to the 2nd vet his immune system was fragile.seems that the lack of care at the first vet did him in.we are going to have him cremated and keep him here with our other furry family member we lost.my wife talked to th breeder for an hour after and she said when she called the first vet to see what was going on they gave her hell.she asked if they tested for a few things and they kept asking her if she was a vet and if not we know what we are doing.the breeder said she still has two puppies from nitro's littler and they are healthy so she dont know how nitro got the parasites.she also said she would be happy to give us one of nitro's brothers .she said she knows it wont replace him but i think she is trying .i dont know if i will take her up on the offer or not right now.this all going on and my brother in law died of a heart attack last wednesday.so i hope nitro and brad are playing together now.

Oh My. I'm very sorry to hear this. Loosing our furry friends (and our non-furry ones) is very rough.

Bummer. I'd pay that first vet a little visit with some friends and picket signs. Sounds like real jerks

thanks everyone.actually the first vet is a country wide 24 hr. emergency chain.they sent me a survey a few days ago about how they did .of course i told them how bad they are and of course havnt heard back.i dont know if i will bother .these days it dont seem to matter.the breeder text my wife back and said she would give us the male dog she has.my brother has two huge neopolition mastiffs one is 10 months old and 140 lbs already.the mother just had another litter two weeks ago.my brother said if i buy the dog he would pay to ship him down when they are ready .so i might do that.i love his dog.
although he eats as much furniture as he does dog food.so i need to think about it for a couple more weeks.
it just is so sad that nitro had such a bad short life.he was sick more than he was healthy.just to watch his life go away and lay there in peace just sucked.my wife was telling me yesterday how my brother in law died.apparently he had a heart attack at the top of the stairs and rolled down the steps breaking his arm and smashing his head
on a bucket of salt they used for ice in the front of the house.he was a cool dude.he looked exactly like the singer of zz top.
so hopefully my black cloud of bad luck is over.

If you're leaning that way, the great thing about chains is that you' can always go above the store's head, and raise hell...

I am so sorry to hear of all the grief you have suffered in such a short amount of time, so overwhelming.
Personally I believe the breeder OWES you another dog or your money back..this puppy was sick from the very start. While you can’t get all the money you spent on vet bills, you can by law get back the money you spent on the dog.
You were a real trooper trying to save the pup, and willing to eat the cost of all the vet bills, but the puppy was sick from the start, and you suffered a big loss with the vet bills already. Get your money back or another puppy from the breeder.

I'm so sorry for your losses this week.
A little advice from someone who grew up in a house that bred dogs, DO NOT TAKE ANOTHER DOG FROM THIS BREEDER. Parvo is serious. I know she told you that the other dogs are healthy, but unless you can positively identify where Nitro got the virus from, stay far away from that breeders pups. I would suggest taking a refund, explaining that you can't take the risk and move on. On that note, you need to try to see if the Parvo is in your home or yard. If Nitro contracted the virus from your home/yard, this is going to happen again with the next puppy as well and I would never wish that heartache on anyone, especially twice. I believe there is a way to remove it from the yard if it's present. I urge you to discuss this with your vet. As for shipping a puppy that you want, please don't. It's a horrible experience for them. Ask your vet for the names of reputable breeders in the area that they've been dealing with through the years. A good breeder has a good relationship with their vet.
These 24hr emergency vet clinics are so terrible. I know they're necessary, but I've seen them do more harm than good to many of my and my families pets as wells as strangers. It's sad. I now have a contract with my vet for them to come to my house after hours if I feel my dog is very sick and they have. The practice contains 7 vets and two are ALWAYS on call, they even give you a list of which days each vet is on call so you know who you need to contact with. It costs me $5 a month to have the on-call list and it's worth every dime. I almost lost my dog a few years ago and vowed that he would die in the comfort of my home that night before I took him to the 24hr clinic. He made it through the night and the next morning when I called the vets office, the receptionist put me on the phone with the doc who told me it sounded like he was too sick for the ride and he would come here. He then let me know about the on-call list and that was that. They even came to my home to put down a cat that hated car rides.
Whatever you decide, good luck. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

What Vet office do you use that does housecalls?

I don't know about Texas, but in NY, where I am, you can file a complaint with the State Board, and they will investigate. Often, the filing is sufficient for a chain to refund your money, which is a start. I understand that nothing will replace Nitro.

Farmingville Animal Hospital- Dr. Jacobson, Dr. Robbins, etc. They do not make it public knowledge. My family has been going there for over 25 yrs. The list costs $5 a month and you have to pay it all up front for the year. The home visit is going to run you $100 as opposed to the $55 in office visit, but for after hours, it's worth it. The closest two 24hr clinics to me have both killed pets on me in the past from stupid human errors and I refuse to go to either one of them ... There are actually quite a few on LI that will do house calls. Some are exclusively house calls now.

Hmm, I'll have to check to see if my office does. We use Floyd Harbor Animal Hospital in Shirley. Dr Etzel there is fantastic.
