Rain Water?

Well I decided to get the bright idea of collecting some rain water, seeing how it is raining buckets lately, and possibly using it to help with topping off my tank. Any comments, suggestions?

I wouldn't use it (unless you can purify it).....you have no clue what is in it...acid rain...etc...

But in the same i have read a lot of your posts and do respect your call on this one.

There is way too much money on the line to risk it. But is acid rain all that common, Im in Dallas TX

Tanks are much smaller then large bodies of water like the ocean.
When impurities fall into the ocean it doesnt have as big of an inpact, due to the large body of water. Which means if it rains i nthe ocean a couple of acid raindrops isnt going to upset the chemistry of that large of a body of water. Same concept in which we say dont put metal into our tanks, but meanwhile theres tons of sunkin ships in oceans that are rusting.

Acid rain dpends on how much sulphur and what not is in the air., I think the rain everywhere is slightly acidic from all the chemical pollutants in the air from cars ect.

LOL...IDK how common acid rain is...to tell you the truth it is the only thing that came to mind as far as pollutants
....but I think you got what I was trying to say...(right?)
Thank you though for the compliment

If you really wanted, get a TDS meter and just measure the 'quality' of the rainwater. I'd bet it's about as high as tap though....

AQUA...Do you think there would be other impurities in it that a tds meter will not pick up? metals? pesticides? isn't a good part of rain water made up from evaporation of water from the ground? What is in that water in the ground?
Also....a lot of rain water picks up the pollutants as it falls....
Sorry...I am having trouble wording this..LOL...BUT I think you know what I am getting at
anyone??

The only reason I even considered the idea is just that i have recieved about 13 inches of rain at my house in the last week, thinking that most of the common smog would have been pushed out of the air by now, but you do have a very good point, meow

Meowzer, I have been doing some research about the whole Phosphates and algea, Kinda confuses me about it. I had someone last night said if I used a razor to scrap the Coriline (hard green algea) off the glass I should siphone it out at the same time? What kind of tester do i need to test for this.

The hard/coraline algae is good.....you want that...some people scrape a small piece and let it spread. I would not remove coraline algae...only from front or side glass
