Red worms swimming in tank

After lights out this evening, I shined my flashlight into the tank as I often do, and I noticed some small, reddish looking worms squiggling around in the tank. Not a lot of them, but there were several. They moved rather quickly, but I managed to suck up a couple with a turkey baster. The largest of them are about 1/4" long, but most were shorter. Their bodies are solid red, with two very distinctive black eyes. They appeared to have rather long (barely noticeable) appendages close to their heads, which seemed to gradually shorten in length the farther back they were. This picture is the best I could take of one, and it's a bit fuzzy because I had the camera very close trying to get a decent size picture. Can anyone tell me what they are?
