I would like to know where you got that tubing from. Everyone around here is selling it for an arm and a leg. Great DIY, thanks a lot!

this is sooooo cool. my only thought is this: with mh's i was led to believe that you don't want to use any mercury or sodium lamps. is that the case with fluorescents too? i only ask this, because i saw in maelv's post, 5 above this one, that the lamps contain mercury.
just a concern.
other than that, this is awesome...

i use one of these lights on my fuge and i can grow corals and macros no prob, i also have these over a FW planted tank.
To my knowledge in the tube the light bulb produces UV light, and when it hits the white film on the glass in the bulb it is transformed into visible light.

when electrons are put into the tube the mercury changes from a liquid to a gas, collision from ions excites the mercury which deflects the electrons at a higher energy level, when forces pull the electron back it releases the extra energy as UV light, this UV light hits the Phosphor coating, where in each phosphor atom, Electrons get hit with high energy UV rays, and these electrons fall back into place releasing visible light. no mercury leaves the tube

Why, why, WHY???? I checked out the doctor's site looking for a different light for my RFB $40 special. And happened to run across the light used on this thread, different make, but same light none the less:
* The world's only patented full-spectrum natural light
Patented, 20-watt Spiralux bulb produces beautiful colors, blends flawlessly with natural light, and lasts about 8 times longer (8,000 hours) than a regular 100-watt bulb (avg. 1,000 hours). Spiralux requires no fancy installation. Simply screw the unit into any medium-based socket. Use it anywhere you would use an incandescent bulb! Perfect in aviaries or near you bird's cage. Great for reptiles, too!

They are selling this bulb for $39.99. I just picked up a pair last night to bring into the office for $6.44 + tax at wal-mart.
