Refugium / Adding LS

I'm contimplating turning a compartment of my sump into a fuge and at the same time add a little more LS to the DT. The tank is 65 gallons and about 3 1/2 months old. Will doing so create another cycle or anything else to worry about? Thanks...

Hi there
Adding a little LS will not spike, but what kind of sand are you getting?

Currently in my tank I have 20 lbs of CaribSea Arag-Alive Special Grade Reef Sand and 40 lbs of CaribSea Arag-Alive Oolite. I was thinking about adding more of one of those to the DT as well as the fuge. Would you suggest something else? I knew I could count on you sepulation!

if you get the bagged sand you may have some ammonia. when i added sand to my fuge i kept the sand i got in a ten gallon tank and watched for a spike.

That is a good idea...then I don't need to worry about it in my DT. Do you know anything about Fiji Mud? I've read that it is good to add to a fuge.
If I understand everything correctly the only things that I really need to add to the fuge is sand (at about 6"), a couple pieces of LR, some cheato and a light (which would be on in the evenings when the main light is off). Am I missing anything? Now the only thing I am concerned about is where to put my skimmer. The only place I can really put it in my sump is the section where the fuge would be. Guess I could bury it in the sand.
thanks...

nope, you want the skimmer on the intake portion of the sump. otherwise i guess you can pull pods and algae into the skimmer.
as for the mud, i'd avoid it. After a year you may have to replace it. plus it is REALLY nasty stuff to deal with (i had it in my small fuge) and it will cause an ammonia spike. (it even tells you on the package to cycle it).
deep sand bed, rubble rock, and algae. you could put in some snails, crabs, bristle worms, etc.

Then I'm not sure what to do. The sump I have is a Berlin BS-1...it has a large compartment where the water comes into (which is where the fuge can go and where I have my skimmer), then there is a narrow compartement where the sponge is then another narrow compartment where the return pump goes. Might have to look into a HOB fuge. Any ideas?

what type of skimmer do you have? are you handy enough to cut acrylic and put in a few bubble traps into it?

I've got an AquaC Urchin Pro run by a Mag Drive 3. I am fairly handy...if I knew exactly what I needed to do I coud do it.

if so, what i would do is glue an acrylic bubble trap about 6" away from the far left wall. then put in your skimmer in that. Make the bubble trap shorter than the outlet of the aquac skimmer, or put the skimmer on a platform like i did in my refuge post.

Yep, that's it. I don't have enough room to put a bubble trap on the left side. The dimension from the bulkhead to the front of the sump is only like 6" and the skimmer is 7 1/2" wide. I might have to install it parallel with the back of the sump. I'll have to get a sketch together to get some input. Just so I'm clear...the bubble trap is just a piece of acrylic siliconed at the sides and bottom...then water will flow over the trap into the fuge through the sponge then pumped into the tank.
I checked out your thread and your fuge looks a lot better then this one will. As long as it serves it's purpose I guess that will have to do for now.
If I do this my sump will be out of commission until the silicone cures. What do I do for filtration while to silicone cures...just run my PHs?
Thanks again...

silicone and acrilic = no good. you gotta use an acrylic weld glue, made by IPS i believe. there's info in the DIY section.
you could always make a sump out of a rubbermaid container until ready.

What was I thinking...I'm in a business where I should no that silicone and acrylic are incompatible...just slipped my mind. How bad would it be to go without the filtration for a day? I imagine that the arylic weld glue sets up very quickly.

reef or fowlr? heavy bioload?
MOST of your filtration actually works on your rock and sand. that filter sock just takes out the solids and the sump just gives more water volume and filtration. I would bet (but make your own call) that you'd be fine.

Yeah, it'll be fine. I have three kinds of coral in a once fish only tank that's been up for 3 years. And up until hopefully next week when all my parts get in, I'll have never had a sump/refuge before.
