Definitely wouldn't hurt to monitor the important levels. Without having a protein skimmer it could take a little time to clear up. I'm not sure if performing large water changes will make it happen any faster. It might help with ammonia but each time you do one you're also removing bacteria since it's suspended in the water column which could be why it's not seeming to go away since the bacteria just bounces right back to compensate.

Just checked ammonia, reads 0, so I'll try leaving it alone for a while. I'm actually leaving for a few days, so maybe I'll come home to a clear tank!

did you clean the sand before adding it? If you dont have fish turn the filter off and it should clear up in a few days
