Republicans aren't Americans?

Ok, so this has nothing to do with interstate travel, and it seems obvious that none of us have been there before, so why are we paying for a bridge when there are perfectly good boats to transport people?
Wow, this thread has evolved quite a bit.

I know when I was there, Ketchikan, I kind of enjoyed the secluded atmosphere. The boat ride I took from what the guy up there called 'town' (one building with 6 or so bunks and a small lunch room with coffee) to the more populated part (they had just gotten a walmart I believe) was rather enjoyable.
Having said all that, I have no idea if this bridge was a good idea or just a way to line one's own pockets, but it was nice to remember the nearly 2 days I got to spend up in Alaska during the tourist offseason.

So, anyone catch Cyndi McCain tonight? She said something to the effect of: We need to take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats. Shouldn't these be one in the same? Is she that rich and disconnected?
(note: I didn't actually see her speak, so I apologize if the media lies...happens all the time. I just saw a clip between hurricane coverage)
I don't think it is a "bad thing" to say, simply reminding people that their loyalty lies with the country not the party.
I do however thing that many on both sides choose party or themselves first. You can look at the arguments they use to defend their positions. If they are particularly weak, or just stupid.
For instance, remember when Iraq wasn't looking rosy. The democrats jumping on the bandwagon saying stuff like. "iraq is lost" or calling our troops murderers and rapists. (when I think all of them were aquitted.) How can calling a war lost be "good for the country" and not the party?

All of the above

Like you said, the boat ride is kinda cool I imagine. Ever been to Seattle? They use ferries, that was a pretty neat ride.

I know lots of conservatives (several family members) who say they'd vote for a child molesting Republican before they would vote for a democrat... Geez. How assanine.

well, across the isle, they voted for a guy who cheated on his wife numerous times, then you have that blind NJ governor who god only knows what he did...
So I don't think that is a horribly unfair comment...

Just saying, it's ridiculous to vote for the party and not the man. Or woman...

I just want to say, how refreshing it is to talk about politics here with you folks rather than the site I would normally go to. it is nice to see people maybe not always agreeing, but always being respectful! Good Job!

As to what Cindy McCain said, I did not see her speech, but if all you heard of her speech was from the media and not from her in it's entirety, then it is best if you take it like a grain of salt. The media loves to take words and twist them around until it makes a good, juicy story. Always do your own homework regarding the election. Don't count on the media to give completely unbiased opinions or an accurate accounting of political events.

You haven't read too many of the political threads here, huh?

This is pretty tame. I like objective, debatable conversation. Most of them aren't like this.

For the most part it is pretty mellow.

This one is pretty mellow but some of the others get into heated debates but usually don't go into name calling or anything like that.

I wouldn't call it heated as much as "passionate explanation of personal political views"

But I do understand what the poster is saying, typically on forums of a political nature, the riff raff shows up, you know the Bush blew up the levies crowd? Or, well I'm sure the lefties think I'm the right wing version of that.

Trust me, this is pretty tame around here, and I have read more than one political conversation here. You guys actually act like adults!
Where I normally go, they are not passionate, they are crazy!
And yes, lots of name calling! On both sides.

Passionate would be one way to put it. "I'm right and you're stupid" would be another.
Why would I think something, if it wasn't right? I'm not going to intentionally think something that is incorrect.

That's just my interpretation of some of the comments I get, or read. And you can't tell me it's never that way. I find it funny that someone could think their opinion is right. I'm highly opinionated and critical of certain things but I'm always appreciative of an informed, differing opinion. It might sway my own, after all, if relayed to me in a respectful manner.
