Return pump head pressure

I'm new to the sw scene and I'm getting my parts in order and had a question about the head pressure. I have a 75g dt with a 20g sump/refug. That'll be in the stand. When calculating the head pressure, is it meant for only the vertical rise of the return or the vertical and horizontal run? Thanks in advance!

The horizontal adds a slight amount of head but insignificant for your purposes. The vertical head is what you should be using to calculate head pressure. Use the distance from the water level in the sump to the water level in the display. It wouldn't hurt to subtract GPH for each elbow to get a better estimate.
