Most hobbyists use a 4 or 5 stage system. Generally the only difference between a 4 and a 5 is that a 4 stage has one sediment stage, a 5 stage has two.
You want a sediment stage, a carbon stage, an RO stage, and a DI stage. Pretty much every RO/DI system that is 4 stages has these. Brand wise there is not a whole lot of difference. I have a Kent Maxxima and an air-water-ice typhoon , both work great.

I have an opportunity to get an Ro unit, and has a minimum rejectoin rate of 90%. Is that good enough to get the benefits of RO water?

Airwaterice, Spectrapure, Kent make nice units and there are others. I would opt for a unit with a higher rejection rate. What GPD is it? You could buy the unit and upgrade the membrane to a higher rejection rate and make sure you match the membrane with the flow restrictor if you change gallonage.

its a 50 GPD unit. it was a typo on the site, its actually 99.5% rejection.
Thanks!

One thing I noticed about my r/o unit is the amount of waste water it produces. It will produce one gallon of clean water and 3 gallons of waste water. I wonder is diffrent brands produce diffrent amounts? I think my r/o membrane is like .001 micron or something like that. I do belive that is standard.

What is the waste water good for? Garden? Plants? SuperSoaker for squirting neighborhood kids?

The waste water is fine for anything except your aquarium. Most chemicals and sediment has been removed so it's probably better for drinking than your tap water.

yes I have read that the waste water is good for any use you want. I just connected to the drain pipe in my house. But I first ran it outside to test it and check for leaks. And thats when I noticed the amount of waste water versus good clean water.
