running carbon effects

Apart from it sucking out some trace elements...does carbon have any other adverse effects if used for a day or so? Also does it effect phosphate in any way?...I'm running a sponge right now...and had planned to run some carbon for a day after I take the phosphate sponge later...anyone see any problems w/ doing it this way?

No problem at all. If it is a low quality carbon then it could leach phosphates, but a couple of days only then it should be fine.

You can leave it indefinately. It will only work for a couple of days though. Even the high quality GAC brands will eventually leach some Phosphate. It will work much better if water is forced through the carbon (active) rather than tossing it in the sump (passive).

I have a submersible fluval 4 that I use in my sump with chemi-pure carbon and I change it every few weeks. The carbon claims a life of 6 months BUT I dont rinks it for 8 bucks.
