In the past 50 years or so we've seen an increase in media involvement in the battlefield. This is crippling our military, imho.
As i mentioned on an earlier post, we are doing better then ever re-enlisting Marines to go back. (Can't speak for other services) As a matter of fact, some are having to make a lateral move to another MOS (specialty) in order to stay in and go back. Go figure. All you hear in the news is how much the troops want to get the hell out of there. And your honest opinion, Journeyman, is so true! Can you imagine if CNN was there on D-Day - 9,000 casualties and 3000 dead??? Or how about this. We lost 749 soldiers and sailors just PRACTICING for D-Day. With today's media, what do you think would've happened to the Battle of Normandy? Just a thought!

True if you include Iraq only. Unfortunately, according to the press, we just surpassed 9/11 fatalities a few days ago between Afghanistan and Iraq. Tough to compare a one-day event to a five-year event when we first went into Afghanistan.

Since the broad war on terror started (not just in Iraq & Afghanistan) ...how many lives have been SAVED?

ABSOLUTELY! The more they get involved, the worse it gets, because they report about only what they want to...whatever is going to get them the highest rating. Doesnt matter to them if its at our soldiers expense or not.

Just think, the first significant terrorist incident on the US happened in 1961. So we've been fighting terrorism since then. Good point, ScubaDoo.

Fortunately, we'll never know. I'm perfectly okay with the idea that terror plots here and abroad are foiled without us getting to watch the details on the evening news.

Well lets see, the current population at Abu- gharib is 3800. If one of these individuals in custody there had terrorist intentions then I would say enough lives were saved to make the effort worthwhile. Not too long ago the Brittish also stopped an attempt. There have been many others since then.

You would have to look at the number of terrorist plots that were foiled. One thing is certain though, Id rather be pro-actively hunting THEM than re-actively dealing with the consequences of failing to act.

Not entirely relevant, but anyone hear about that 10 year old boy who died by "imitating" sadam after watching his execution video on the Spanish network of channels? Quite sad. :scared:
