Sailfin??

No...I luckily have never had a problem with Ick on any of my fish.....but just about all tangs in particular are very susceptible to Ick. I don't know if you have any fish in your tank now, but it may be safe to QT the tang. I was lucky....I didn't QT mine and everything turned out fine. But I am looking to purchase a Blonde Naso Tang and I am more than likely going to QT it.

yeah ill prolly do a water change tommorow but i dont think he'll die from it.my buddy has a sailfin in a 29g bowfront with damsels and clowns and his trates are at 160+. now im not saying thats right to do but im hoping he will be fine for now i will be working on lowerin my trates with water chages and stuff

1. sounds like that sailfin has been in that tank for a long time. he eventually got semi used to the horrible water quality, but i guarantee that tang will not make it.

when ever i buy a fish i test the water from teh store i bought it from. SWF has 0 trates, 0 trites, 0 amm, ph is 7.9-8.0, sg is around 1.023ish
a fish that has been living in water quality at 0 trates from anywhere between 1 week and 2 months will not adjust to a tank with a trate reading of 80 and live, unless that fish is a mutant. GL.

fish can live with high trates. I wouldnt wanna acclimate a fish to that but trates arent that big of a deal with fish. They are with corals. Kole tangs are really active gorgeous fish. Mine is anyway

Nitrates are not toxic to fish unless they are WAY high. I have many friends who have Fish Only tanks and they could care less about their trate levels...my neighbor has a 220 with about 6 angels, 3 heniochus butterflies, clowns and more (I have a video of his tank for those who don't believe me) and his trates are constantly at 160-180.
I wouldn't worry about the trates much as long as it's a FO tank. Of course the lower the better, but hey....if it works for you then thats cool.

From my research....trates do not start to affect a fish until they are out of control....so if that is true.....IMO....at low to mid levels the fish really shouldn't feel much from them.
Now I do agree that any ammonia or Nitrites during acclimation and that fish is toast.

trates arent toxic to a fish at 80. 20 is a joke for a fish only tank. Dont kill yourself to get them at 0. If you ever run corals then kill yourself. But Fish Only. 20 is nothing
