My SAILFIN tang has been staying near the floor and has not ate in the past 3 days. Salinity is fine, PH, ammonia, and nitrate are all ok. Please help!!!

How big is the tank, and what else is in it? It also helps if you include the actual values for your water parameters.

Is there a chance you have a voltage leak?

Any sign of HLLE?

Have you added any other fish recently?

So the tank is a year old and the tang has been in for about a month and a half. The tank is 75 gallons and I have not added any fish.

No new fish, some signs of HLLE that I didn't notice before. Currently checking for voltage leak
The hlle could be a contributing factor. Tangs need alot of alage, plus good nutrition. I feed my tangs alage sheets almost daily. They also do eat meaty foods w my other fish, but lots of alage

However, how come my other fish were not affected but the conditions? I have a blue tang and he was fed the same

Blue Tangs are zoo-planktivores that sometimes consume algae. Sailfins are herbivores that sometimes eat zoo-plankton.

I do not know if that is the real answer. A 4 foot tank is about 4 feet shorter than what a Sailfin needs but the tank size wouldn't kill the Tang in a month. It could stress it to the point where it could be more susceptible to something else though.

The tank is bigger than 4 feet however, I'm not sure if the fish had perhaps red gills? Wasn't really sure what the color was before for the sailfin

How do I stop HLLE from happening? My filter uses activated carbon

2 things. Really depends on the type of seaweed your offering. None of my fish where fans of red seaweed however green and purple are loved.
2nd if your tank is 75 gallons they are 4ft long. Old style 100 gals can be 6ft , but most tanks start at 125 gallons to push over 4ft. A 125 ,150,180 are all 6ft

Have you been able to test for a voltage leak?

Voltage itself doesn't cause HLLE... I'm not sure it the cause is actually known, I have my own theories...

Stress is a constant among fish that develop HLLE. Insufficient swimming space causes stress, Trace element deficiencies can increase stress (most trace elements are reduced with the constant use of GAC).

Two dominant Tangs in the same space can cause stress.

Remove the stress and most fish recover nicely.

do you know what brand is the best for seaweed? I just don't want to buy a crappy kind :)

It's been extremely weird. This is the 4th fish that died for the past year while the blue tang and clownfish live fine. Is there any there way from a voltmeter to measure stray voltage? Also, the SAILFIN had its lateral line popping out. Is that bad?

Any chance you have any pics. We should have asked for that immediately. HLLE usually makes the lateral line look whitewash. If it appeared to be "popping out" maybe it was emaciated. Like Bang said they need the algae, that is what they've evolved to eat so if it isn't getting enough algae, even though it is eating tons of meaty food, it could still be malnourished and die. I have never dealt with HLLEpersonally so I may be very wrong. I don't think it is a fast killer. There is a very sad looking 6" naso at the only fish store near me in a 20 gallon tank with a severe case of HLLE. His whole lateral line and head is eroded. It's been in the tank there for at least a year, gradually getting worse. Obviously I never buy anything there unless it is an emergency.

I like to buy the Rods algae sheets. They have a variety pack.
