Your kidding me, the water change water came up with 1200 mag!!! That has never happend to any sample I ever made with IO salt. Simply amazing, now if they can just bump the alkalinity up and keep things consistant.

There were way to many sticky's going on and it had to be released. I'll keep track of it from time to time.

If you noticed Sam said he's using Salifert test kits
Those results don't surprise me one bit. I've tried 3 Salifert Mag test kits, they all regestered different results. 1600,1400 and 1150.
Like I said, "I don't trust a single PO4 kit out there" same goes with Magnesium.

Agreed, I've had trouble myself with them, always wondered if it was simple user problem. Usually I came up with 900's or maybe 1000. Edit: for instant ocean

I kind of trust the Salifert Ca and alk test kits only because I see the expected changes when I adjust my reactor , still not sure about the trate kit.

I mixed a batch of Instand Ocean's Reef Crystals and tested it today.
Ca: 420
dKH: 10
Don't have a Mg test kit
SG: 1.025
Temp: 80
I use Aquarium Systems for the alkalinity and LaMotte for the Calcium test kits.
Water is RO/DI, aerated 36 Hr before adding salt mix, aerated and heated for 48 hours before testing.
Hope this helps

Hey thomas I just kind of fell onto this thread but sinse you have an interest in comparable salt mixtures about consitancy of brands I thought this may be of interest to you. The S-15™ Report™ is the first and only independent comparative assay of 15 different brands of artificial or synthetic sea salts. It was commissioned and paid for by Global Scientific Publications. GSP is not in any way affiliated with any manufacturer of sea salts. Nor, is any manufacturer of synthetic sea salts associated with Global Scientific Publications.
A freind of mine is the CEO for a marine supplies company. He has written articles for reef magazine and many others, Also a speeker at many marine hobby and aquarium related functions.I cant post the web link to this report, because it is linked to another supplier which is against this sites policy .But if you would like to veiw the R15 reports and its finding feel free to email me I'll be more than happy to send them to you.I found it very interesting reading and very informative. lyndog13@aol.com if you like to research this is a good one

Thanks, I've read that report when it first came out years ago. You don't think that report was kinda bias?

Dr. Shimek did a test awhile back useing lavea to test survival rates of a few brands, IO and coralife included..... this was a sample result....
"The samples of the artificial sea water made with Instant Ocean contained on the average 4.0 larvae per replicate, while those with Coralife averaged 7.4 larvae per container. The samples from Hobbyist B also contained a low number of larvae, 5.1 per container. The average number of larvae from samples of natural sea water, Crystal Sea Marinemix-Bioassay Formula, and BioSea Marinemix all had a greater average number of larvae, ranging from 35.8 to 41.5 larvae per replicate. There were no larvae in the natural sea water dosed with cupric dichloride where the copper concentration was equal or greater than 100 ppb."
Pretty boreing article but gets the point across...I wish he had tested more brands though.
Those intrested can C & P this into google...might find it.
