Salt weight???

Ok, I'm mixing my salt into my water...the instructions states to mix 1.4lb to 5 gal. of water???
HOW do I measure out 1.4lb of salt?? We don't have a scale here that will measure that small of an amount, and a weight scale would be too inaccurate??

I've got a 40gal tank, and a 14lb bag of Red Sea salt.
I'm mixing the water in 18 gallon totes. I currently have 15 gallons of water in each tote, so I guess I need to figure out how much salt to put in 15 gallons of water. According to the instructions, that would be 4lb of salt.

did some calculations, and it seems, your gonna be mixing around 20-25% of the full bag of salt into all the 15g buckets.
total salt used will be:
1.4 * 8(5g each) =11.2lbs for 40G
comes out to around 3.73lbs per 5g.
give or take ofcourse. but thats roughly it.

I appreciate the calculations, I guess my question is, HOW am I going to take 3.73lb of salt out of the bag. I don't want to guess, do I???

Ok, sounds good. I did do a crude measurement with the bathroom scale. So I think I have a pretty close measurement for the first mix. I can add/subtract those measures after I get the water heated and mixed thoroughly and check it with the hydrometer.

So I'm running around the house like a wildcat trying to figure out how to mix the salt and aerate the water for awhile before I add it to the tank...my wife calmly says...
"Why don't you use the powerheads you bought? They're used for circulating water aren't they?
That's why I love this woman so......

Try starting with 1/2 cup per gallon, test your water and add more salt if needed to get to a salinity of 35ppt.

ok i don't know if this helps, but
1 lb = 16oz
1 cup = 8 oz
so 1 lb = 2 cups
welcome to the boards

have fun with your new tank
