yes the will usually come out at night time. They are usually in the sand most of the time. It's cool when they do come up. Because it looks like nothings in the sand bed and then out of no where. A starfish comes up

My sand sifting star makes at least a cameo appearance or two a day. Usually in the evening right after the actinincs come on he will surface and climb up the glass.

Once it removes all of the critters from the sand bed you will start seeing it a lot more often.

Sand shifting stars and sand dollars will stay in sand bed all day long if they are healty. As Bang Guy said, when all the critters will finish (this will be quickly) they will come out and search for food. In the end they will die because of starving :(

I thought you could spot feed Sand Sifters. I've never had one though so I really don't know.

you can......i used to take peices of chopped krill or raw shrimp and bury them in the sb about an inch down....it got to the point that he would follow my finger when it hit the water with the food...kinda weird comin from an animal with no brain or eyes!
good luck

Yes you can spot feed them but in a reef tank this will make the nitrate level up just for a white, not active and atractive star... Also when they die you wont be able to find them because they will be in the sand bed and cause nitrate...

...but the important point is that they will desimate the micro infauna of a DSB in little time! They can be fed...and they will come out more and more often searching for food...but they will devoure the critters we want in our sand beds ...
