where'd u hear that? sounds like you are mixing 2 myths into the same rumor. is that what your lfs told you? they are known for being wrong on just about everything.
stay with the sand, and do not start over again. let it settle and cycle. you will be better off in the long run. cc is muchmore work

I have a DSB that is from 4 to 5.5 inches. It is full of Spaghetti Worms, snails and pods up the ying yang.
Here is a 1-week old picture with diatoms on the DSB.

Picture is 500KB: 1600 x 1200. Sorry went camera crazy with tank.:jumping: Only have the Actinic 03 Blue on and not the
10,000K bulbs. I have the timers setup to use the Actinc before and after the 10K bulbs.
You can see the Nitrogen gas pockets so the DSB is working!!!!

kip normally you give good advice. but this time i must disagree with you.
quickrete does work ok. not as good as aragonite sands but works just fine. i have seen meany using it. and it is only not as good as aragonites.
qqartz and silica sands wil not creat an issue with silicates causing algae. it would take a much lower ph to break the glass down and affect your silicates int he water column.

I called 4 home depots and they never had it. Also called lowes and nope, So I asked the wife since she workes for Southern States (people that sell to Agway). They have yardright and get trucks of it.
So check your local Agways etc for it. It is like 5 retail or like $2.75 wholesale.

Kip, I have read many of your posts and I respect your opinion....
I went to my local Walmart (south florida) and found a playsand with a child in a sand box... Well the sand looked kinda dark to me so I just took a sample home. I did the vinegar sand and it fizzled a little.
Kip, is this sand ok??? Will it look nice?
Lowes has Quikrete Premium Playsand.
Home Depot has Quikrete Sand.

I'm not Kip but I play one on TV.
I think that sand is the good stuff. Can you put some in your hand & look closely. If it's variably small grained (sugar sized) and the grains are smooth & rounded (oolitic) then it will be good.

Existing set up....
Just making sure, the sand fizzled only a little. That means that it is ok....
I want to be extra careful b/c I have invested alot of time and money and I do not want the tank to crash.
