Hi guys, I need to get new or add sand to my new tank I'm starting. I have a 55 gallon tank right now with about 3 inches of sand in it, should I buy all new sand ? Or just add to the sand I have now? I'm starting a 75 gallon , the tank I have now has been running for over 6 year. If new sand what kind and how much? I like the Fiji pink sand ..l.

It is up to you. It would probably be wise to clean the old sand if you decided to keep it.

You will find in this hobby there are a lot of different opinions....and people do things differently
Personally.......I would get new sand (dead).....and seed it with the sand from my other tank......

Yup, I would invest in 100% dry aragonite sand for the new tank... about 75 to 90 pounds... (like 3 bags of 30 pound aragonite) and then just use one cup of the old sand to seed the new. No reason to add excessive nitrates and phosphates to a new tank right off the bat.

I agree. you tend to wind up causing more headaches that cash saved by re using old sand if its been stirred up or moved. trust ,me on this I used old sand to set up my 125 and am still fighting cyano from it.

Hi,
Every single tank is as unique as the person who sets it up, no two are exactly the same. You have to do what works for you. Do you have the energy to clean your old sand (it's quite the chore), since you like the Fiji pink do you even want it? When you ask advice sometimes you need a goal and ask about exicuting your plan.... LOL...if ten people answer you, you will get ten different opinions.
Your only real concern is to make sure your fish have enough good bacteria already established in the tank so you don't have an ammonia spike and start a cycle. You can accomplish that in many ways but it is the most important thing when upgrading your tank. As I remember your other thread....all the "different confusing" advice had that one goal in mind. So choose a method and commit to it....and enjoy that larger tank, a 75g is a great size, much better than a 55g.
