I have a blood red or scarlet shrimp in my reef. He cleans nothing that I am aware of. Mostly just hangs around looking pretty. He literally just hangs around...upside down under some rocks. He does scavenge when the tank is fed but makes no effort to find food otherwise. Mostly, his job is just to hang aound within my view and look pretty. No work is required of him, which is good because he does none that I have ever seen!!

Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp are very dependent on having full strength seawater. Is your Salinity near 35 or 36ppt? This is very important.

ya my scarlet shrimp just hangs around too.. wtf... doesnt scavenge either that i can see.. my salinity is at wher it should be .22

I think your salinity may be a bit low. You might want to shoot for a specific gravity of 1.025 or 1.026. This will give you salinity roughly around 34 to 36 ppt. Right now, your salinity is closer to 30 ppt which would be considered by most to be too low. Adjust it slowly.

oh really?... man my stupid LFS said to set it at around 1.022 to 1.024.. hrmm... annoyed now.. so do u think this is why my cleaner shrimp is the way he is right now?.. or i just got a bad one

Not sure that your scarlet shrimp is acting abnormally. Mine does not do a thing except hang around. Never once has "cleaned" a fish. Try regular cleaner shrimp for that.
Adjust your salinity slowly and see if it makes a difference for your scarlet. Don't expect alot out of him though. They are mostly reef decorations and serve no real valuable function except pleasure to our eyeballs. The reef will be happier with a higher salinity, so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain as long as you adjust it SLOWLY. A rapid change in anything usually spells problems and/or death to livestock.
P.S. LFS is one of the worst places to get valuable information about the care and maintainance of your tank. Certainly to be avoided in regards to proper stocking. There are several good BB's, such as this one, where you can get excellent advice and a variety of opinions from well seasoned reefers. Some LFS's are honest and care greatly about the livestock they manage. Most care more about the almighty dollar and will tell you almost anything to make a sale. Many LFS employees have no clue about saltwater and give bad advice because of it. Other LFS employees are very knowledgeable and experienced in the world of saltwater and give great advice. The trick is trying to figure out which is which. A bit tricky when you're new to the hobby. There are several LFS folks posting here that are outstanding and sell quality merchandise and care very much about how the livestock will be handled in your system. Whenever you are investigating a new addition or problem with your tank, use the search feature on this site and you will get tons and tons of excellent info about your topic. Give it a try...you'll see what I mean. The search button is on the top right of the SWF.com site.
