Fish have personalities just like we do. Some are shy. He doesn't comprehend that you paid $60 for him and that you expect him to parade around and entertain you. He's just being himself. It'll make you appreciate him more when he does come out and play.

After a devastating wipe out from ich, may I suggest a QT tank? I'm a hard head and I didn't think I needed one, but when you've got 4 or 5 fish in a 55g, like I did, one fish can with ich can wipe them all out in 2 days. Shucks, a 29 gallon with over-filtration is better than putting risky fish in a tank. If you read the post about army wife/divorce, you can see I found a great deal on a used 125g ($180) and now use my 55g for a QT tank.
