Cranberry, I have a Canon Rebel and never use it because I can't figure out how to get the macro shots... short of standing across the room then cropping and even that is not usually adaquate.
I am trying to buy a sweet lens off ----, but I always get outbid in the last few minutes. I don't know lenses by their "real" names so if you mentioned it forgive me, but which lens are you using and how far away is your target?
I love your pics!

Yes, the angler will outgrow the pico. Some species can get way bigger than 8 inches and one of the common ones seen are like 15". It's very important to positively ID them before you buy them. My guy will get between 4-5 inches. But unless you get a postive ID, you could be walking home with a pygmy to a commerson.

There isn't a whole lot to say about the care of a leaf fish. They are very easy except for one blaring flaw.... they are very hard to convert to frozen. I got one on frozen but the first one has only nipped at it a couple of times. So you have to be prepared for the possibility you will have to feed live for life.
They are pretty docile. Very tolerant of other fish. There was some "puffing" when I put the red leaf in with the yellow. He was bigger and was clearing showing dominance by expanding his gills, expanding his throat region and standing up on his pectoral fins. It was quite the display. The red one is a little aggressive. He once grabbed the yellows face after yellow had stolen some food from him. It was like 20 seconds after, he just walked right up to him and grabbed his face. He also pecked at the fuzzy lionfish when they were all too close looking for food.

The last guy is a cockatoo waspfish. Much larger than a leaffish and has a higher venom level. I'm afraid to clean is QT tank. He's a very hungry boy and comes right up to your hand and will follow you... that makes me nervous in a 24g. I tried to clean the glass already this morning in the dark because he finally has his white face and I'm dying to get pictures. But after a couple of wipes he came on out and I had to stop. I'm guessing these guys are easier to train to frozen than leaf fish because I already have him converted. I'm not sure what the general census is on that.
Here's pics of the difference is shape.

For the longest time, my two favourite lenses were the Canon 100mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.8. I recently upgraded to the 50mm 1.4 and it is one AWESOME lens. I take a lot of stock photos at the LFS and the new 50mm helps alot with the low light and pacing stressed fish.
How far away really depends on the situation. If the fish is dead still, I will go as close as the lens will allow until he is full frame. That is unless it is a very "frilly" type fish that has a lot of depth of field. Then I will back up.

They come from the LFS and vary greatly in price. Some pretty cheap like the volitan for 15 bucks. He was just walnut size and oh so cute.

I live in LA, so there are a lot of fish stores here. I'm also a Rep for certain aquariums products so I see ALOT of fish stores in a day. They keep a look out for certain fish for us and we visit the wholesalers occasionally.
