seahorses and cardinal fish?

was curious, I know that horses and cardinals are compatible, but my question is this:
If my I get a male horse to go with my females and they mate, will the cardinals eat the ponys before I can get them out of the tank? or do you transfer the male before he releases the ponies making this a mute point?

Some people put the male in a "breeding station" right before birth......then they can safely get the babies out

thanks I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure, still a long way off as my girls are still single just a question that i had been pondering for the future.

Yes cardinals will eat fry, along with any shrimp and filters. Horses usually deliver right about the time your lights come on in early morning.
Most will either move their males to a fry tank, or use an in tank holding tank,-made out of a plastic goldfish bowl with the sides cut out and window screen glued on. I tried using plastic canvas, and found out the hard way that its too big and the fry can get thru.

Have you actually had any fish eat SH fry? Since Renee and I no longer rear fry, and since we've been specializing in Scorpaeniformes, I've actually TRIED to feed them to several different fish that SHOULD have snapped them up, and they don't recognize them as food. From everything I've seen personally, none of our predatory fish eats them, altho I've seen inverts and adult SH snag them.
Just wondering...

Well, now that you say it, no I have not witnessed it, but everyone on the other site always told me they would. I dont keep many fish with my horses, but I do think my jaw fish would have if he could of. lol

For what it's worth, I have personally seen a lyretail anthias and a maroon clown gobble up newborn H. reidi fry.
No, the maroon clown was NOT in the SH tank. ;-)

I'm not surprised at the clown, but since clowns are about as low on my list of fish I'd keep as one can get, I have no experience there. I'm surprised at the anthias because our ravenous H. borbonius trio that will even eat from a feeding stick won't give them so much as a look.
I did find it interesting that none of our smaller lions, scorps, waspfish, or stingfish didn't eat them. I even tried them in the barnacle blenny tank and they showed no interest either...fortunately, the SH parents have a tendency to eat them.

I hear ya on the clown. It's like a staple fish you see in almost any saltwater tank. I personally still like pink skunk clowns, but I will NEVER own a maroon clown again. Rotten personality.

so the ponies need to be seperated from the adult horses as soon as possible also? is that what I am gathering?

If you plan on raising them, then-Yes The fry need to be moved to what ever tank you plan on raising them in

To add to what Theresa said, it's USUALLY not because the adults will eat the fry (most don't), but rather the sterile conditions needed for fry (to minimize hydroid and ciliate blooms) as well as being able to get the proper food concentration for the fry (we're talking live <24 hrs old BBS at least twice a day). You'd never be able to keep up if you left the fry with the adults.
