Okay I'm getting mixed info...do they eat fish and corals or don't they eat fish and corals. I have one in my QT tank and I really want to put it in my dt. But I don't want it to eat my fish or coral. What the general consensus?

I have heard err read green brittle stars are aggressive and known to eat fish...can't say that I have heard of a serpent doing so. I have a serpent...at least I think I still do
, and it doesn't eat my fish. Don't know about the corals. I would not think though, as serpents are more scavengers than grazers.

When I was at a SW store this past weekend they had a green serpent star and the guy working there told me they eat fish while they are sleeping.

I am pretty sure it is the green brittles...not serpents. My serpent is green...no death. Not positive, but I think this is the case. Think I read that on Fenner's site. WWM

I'm openly admitting I don't know. I do know for a fact that the starfish the guy was talking about was a rather large green serpent. But then again, it was a LFS!

I am just thinking out loud friend, not debating you.

I have 2 reef tanks. Each of them have a serpent starfish. They are cool. They do not bother anything. Sometimes I do spot feed them because they are alittle slow to catch food.

Ok after looking at those pics the starfish in the tank I saw this past weekend that was labeled as a serpent star was a huge green brittle star!

I have a black and white banded serpent star. It's very cool to watch. We spot feed it using a wooden skewer

Green brittles are in the same family as serpent, so he wasn't lying to you. Greens are one of the more aggressive of the serpent stars though.

99% of the time your going to be safe putting a brittle star in a reef, the only know predator amongst them is the green brittle star, who is defiantly capable of capturing and eating unwary or sleeping fish. I would consider any but the green (unfortunatly sometimes called the green death), most are detritivores and scavangers and oft have been blamed for eating an already dead/dying fish.

So he did tell me the truth then.

Here is a pic of a green brittle. They look different from the smooth arms of a serpent. Forgive the quality, I grabbed this pic from the web. It isn't my star.

That's the exact star they had. It was only like $12.

Yep, the red ones are great too. It is those darn green ones that get aggressive. They will not swoop up and kill your fish. Please don't get that impression. If a fish happens to be in the sand and fighting for life then he is likely to get eaten though.
