Skimmer Cup Frequency

I only have to dump my skimmer cup every 6 months. I have a 46 gallon tank with Aqua C Remora skimmer. How abnormal is this? Is something wrong with my skimmer? I've cleaned the thing out but it's made no difference.

Wow, I drain mine every 1 - 3 days.
Doesn't sound like your skimming much or at that point worth plugging in to me.

for most people, its once very 1-3 days. which part of the skimmer r u cleaning. the only part that needs to be cleaned is the collection cup. the body just needs a rinse every 6-9 months. try lowering the collection cup or check ur skimmer powerhead.

Yes it's Worth plugging people are quick to assume that if they can not comprehend something the its useless and not worth plugging in wrong I am a newbee and I have the same identical skimmer and this skimmer has worked right from the start. Even though the instructions said that it may take a while to actually get foam by the second hour it was plugged in I was getting plenty of foam. The cup is very easy and it was very simple to set up and makes almost no noise. I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone who wants a skimmer. My friend all you have to is continual to adjust your skim cup to achieve the type of skim you want dry/wet and of course continual to adjust the ball valve or 'O' ring(it's called tweaking). By all means do plug in your skimmer because you paid top dollars for it and it is one of the top of the line HOB skimmers on the market, I know this because I have one

I couldn't really understand it but probably in regards to my post, but if you haven't gotten a cupful of skimmate in 6 months something isn't working right, and is the same as having it unplugged. I don't have experience with that brand but it probably needs to be cleaned/tweaked/adjusted.
I like to skim wet and drain the cup often... the more the better -- I can always add salt and water pretty easy.

I have to change mine EVERY DAY! It fills up with dark nasty water. Buuuut if I raise it up slightly I only have to do it every 2-3 days depending on whats going on in the tank
I have a 46 also

I also have a 46 gallon, and with new skimmer (just in the tank one week), I emptied the collection for the first time today...BUT...I will be checking it much more often, like very 3 days or so. I keep the cup really pretty high in the chamber to get dry skim, and I found that after a week the collection cone was almost plugged with crud. Like I said, it's only been in my tank for a week, and I didn't think it would skim so well right off the bat (CPR bak pack, in case anyone's interested). By the way, after water change today it took off right away without a ton of adjusting!! We'll see how it goes in the future.

hmmph...

I can probably let mine go for 6 months, and only have around a couple inches...
I only have 6 little fish in a 150 gallon tank with a 30 gal sump...
I'm thinking the original question really depends on other means of filtration, bioload, food types and frequencies.
The remora is a good skimmer. Do you still see oily film on your waters surface?? Are you getting nitrate readings or anything??
This is a very broad type of topic...

Thanks for the response guys. I havent' been getting bad nitrate readings, i'll test my water again tomorrow just to check. When I first bought this skimmer over a year ago it worked just as everyone else said, I had to empty the cup once or twice a day. I have the collection cup as low as it will go. What exactly should I check on the unit and the powerhead? Water still flows through the unit so the powerhead is working. What else do I check? Should I just buy a new powerhead to see if that works? Thanks again for help.

I have the Octopus 100-BH HOB skimmer and Ive only been pulling urine colored water. The tube taking in the water is brownish but the skimmate is dark yellow. The cup fills after about a week/week and a half. Im using the stock pump and havent modded it nor did I do the vinegar dip to break it in.

Which pump are you using?
Are you using the surface skimmer?
When I had my remora and it's efficiency seemed compromised, I took it all apart to clean it and found an operculum (snail's door hatch) blocking one of the pump inlets.
I even replaced the pump before I found that stupid thing!

there is a little screw that is found inside on top of the hard tube that is jetting water into the chamber. you may need to remove it and clean the area out with a thin tube cleaner that many lfs sell in multiple sizes. make sure you tighten it fully but dont over tighten it or it will fall into the mixing chamber.

I'll give these things a try. The pump I'm using is a Maxi Jet that came with it. I'll try to take it apart before I buy a new powerhead.

ugh I have a 46 gal too with a bak pak,
and I dont' get much skimate at all! I'll do water change and it will work and fill up like a 1/2 inch then I have to adjust it everyday and it's horrible I think that may be the cause of my high nitrates and all the algea I have. Anyways I think that the skimmers are very touchy but u probably should have a lot of skimate the more the better I would think?

Did you buy it new? What kind of pump (brand and model number)? Did you lower the cup (this is what the O ring around the cup does, higher the O ring, the lower it drops). How old is your tank? What kind of fish and how many?
I actually have my RemoraC Cup drilled and a 90* drain added to it draining into a 5 gallon container, so i dont have to worry about it overfilling or spilling back into the tank somehow.

Yes I bought it new. It's a Maxijet pump, I can't remember which one. I lowered the cup all the way. The tank's about 15 months old. It's a 46 gal tank with a clown, foxface, firefish, and angel fish.

Check the nozzle that sprays inside the chamber (venturi (sp?) sprayer) and see if its not plugged. There is a plastic screw there that you can back out with a screw driver and take a pipe brush and unplug it. Check the tube from the pump to that sprayer also for blockages.
Are you getting any bubbles in the middle chamber in the unit itself? Bubbles should be created in the 1st chamber, then rise in the 2nd.
Also the water that comes out of the RemoraC should be a nice flow, not a huge one, but a nice steady one like a low power trickle filter. If its like dripping an very uneven flow then something is def. wrong.
Does your display tank have lots of micro bubbles created by the skimmer? This is normal and if its not doing so.. then again.. something MIGHT be wrong.
Just some ideas to look at.
You could also go to one of your local big chain pet stores that have the word "PET" in it and buy the same pump and try it out. If that doesnt work you could always take the pump back and say it didnt work with what you were doing.
