I do the same thing with my tests. My API tests are a few years and I have had them double checked by a couple of my LFS's and they are still accurate.

IIRC, API recommends a shelf life of about 1 year for most of their tests. Somebody had posted some info from them a while back of how to determin the date of manufacture and the suggested usable life span of each test. Reminds me I'd like to dig that info back up and check my old kits.

If you come across the thread/post, can you post a link? I'd be interested to check mine as well.

Random pic

The new bulb makes it look really blue in the picture.
There is a definite spotlight effect in the tank as far as the bulb goes... though, it is permissible for the time being.
<rant> I am running into a snag though right now... looks like I might be moving in a couple of months. My rent and electric is too high for the budget that we are on, so we are currently looking for a new place to live within our budget. We tried living in a nice expensive place, but it's straining and stressing us out a bit too much. Time to start living within our means a bit more so that we can actually have something. Which means that I'll have to move the tank and most likely take down the 75g planted aquarium permanently. If it isn't one thing, it's another. Anyways,... </rant>

Finally got a tracking number for the mp10. The tank is almost complete. This weekend i might use a little store credit to get a frag of montipora if my water tests come back negative for ammonia and nitrite.
Still looking for a new place to live. Throat is still sore. Hopefully it will all work out soon.

Looking forward to seeing what the VorTech does for you. I think you will be very happy with it. Moving the 10g will be much easier than moving a 75g, that's fo sho. Hopefully you will find a decent place that you and the wife are happy with that will allow you to stash some extra dough and maybe set up the 75 without it being so much of a burden. Either way, I'm excited to see where you take whatever tank you set up.

Well, today went well. Im having a garage sale in the morning. Just so that i dont have to move so much stuff when i do move.
The tank is going through a small diatom stage. Good sign. All the hermits in the tank are still alive as well as the feather dusters. So i am pretty sure that the tank is doing just as it should. I will be purchasing a couple of filters for the hob filter and 5g of saltwater and 5g of freshwater. Water change this weekend. :) im excited to see what my water parameters are tomorrow and if i can go ahead and get a hardy coral. :)
Still thinking about building a diy led system for the tank. Just curious how i will go about hanging it.

I am pretty sure you will need the rubber spacer for a 10g. If he didn't include it, just let me know. I'm pretty darn sure that I have the one that came with my 10 along with the foam guard

MP10w came in today. I got a small chance to play with it some. If i can post on the desktop computer tonight ill talk about it more.
Used some store credit today for a couple pieces of orange montipora capricornis. I might possibly put in an order at harrys frags sooner than i thought.
Still thinking about setting up a diy led kit.

Are you thinking of a strip led lite or just an led bulb? Let me know. I'm kind of a McGyver of sorts. Give me enough time to mull something over and I can usualy come up with a solution.

If you have an old 2ft or 4ft flourescent light fixture check out ledlight.com. They have led tubes to replace flourescent bulbs ranging anywhere from $40 to $80 depending on the length, watt and so on. You just have to remove the old ballast from your fixture. They also have led ropes that start at $10. Hope this helps.

Thanks Silverado for trying to help! I appreciate the input, but that's not really something that I need at the moment.
Eric, The sandbed is holding up fine. What I did was adjust it down and set it at a point which I didn't see the sand particles moving around at all or very, very little. I'm going to continue to monitor it for the time being. I don't have it on full blast by any means, but I do have it just high enough to add some well needed flow to the tank.
The montipora that I purchased yesterday is kinda coloring up since I purchased it. It was under a rock when I bought it and it had bleached out a little from the lack of flow and light, but now it's doing pretty well in my tank. Temperature is holding steady - so is the salinity. I went by the store yesterday and I got those water tests done and that monti purchased but I didn't get 5g of saltwater for a water change. So, if I have time after school tomorrow, I will go by and get some more water for a water change tomorrow night.
I asked the LFS owner here in town to start buying up a couple frags a week for me and he said that he would. If he does has yet to be determined, but it would be nice if he did. I am considering actually putting in an order at harry's frags after I come back from vacation sometime in the middle of next month.

I have been watching the tank on and off today and since I installed the MP10, my water has become more clear today. the particulates in the water column have now been stirred up and filtered out of the tank.. it's pretty amazing how quickly it did it. I'm very impressed with the MP10. The monti is looking good. I might go back to the LFS this weekend and see what kinda goodies I can get my hands on.
One thing is for sure,... I am going to have to buy some new filter inserts for the filter. I'm going to double up the filter pads so that I only replace one every two weeks. I might go ahead and buy a box of them so I always have them available.
As a side note, to anyone who is reading: Please keep me in mind and send some good thoughts and feelings my way. I need to make a very tough decision soon.

When I first added the MP40's to my tank I had a similar experience. My skimmer did some serious work the first few days. The flow pattern of the VorTechs caused the particulates to stay suspended in the water column, as opposed to finding a dead spot in which to settle, which allowed the mechanical filtration of the tank to do it's job much better.
