You crack me up bro. I think you should figure out what you really want, and go for it.

I know, I know, I know. I'm dreaming for the time being. I am going to concentrate on the 10g tank for the time being and then possibly do something else later. Who knows where I will end up in a year.

After next week, I have ten weeks left of the entire semester. I'm pretty excited. woohoo!

By the way, I spotted my first spec of coralline algae growing in the tank. Not surprisingly, it's growing in the furthest spot from the PAR38 LED light! and again, not surprising, it's growing on the plastic wet side of the MP10. lol.

Seems like the lower the power of the LED light, the better. I'm kinda wondering if I should buy a BuildMyLED light for the 10g tank or if I should rig up a higher light post for the PAR 38 bulb and put it on a TRIAC dimmer switch.... Anyone...??

I don't know if I can post a *.gif here, but I found this amusing...

Some people ask me how I will dose my tank when I start adding coral,... well, it goes something like this:

Now that's funny.

I wonder if 1W LED's would be okay on a 10 gallon? I think that if you were inclined to put a DIY LED fixture over your 'dream tank' then this would be a great practice run. I think it would be a great learning experience either way. Personally, I have no desire to build one myself. I don't have the time or the skill to build one that would look clean enough for me.

And that's my problem as well... I have the desire, but I know that I don't posess the skill required to make it look clean enough for my tastes. You're probably right about not worrying about what fixture to get for a future build.... things will change soooo much in the next year and LEDs keep getting cheaper and cheaper with more and more features... If I buy something now I'll be kicking my butt in a year. lol

I talked to the guys at BuildMyLED about getting a fixture for my 10g tank and they recommended just using one and to put it on a dimmer switch. I like the design and look of their units as well, but I know there's a lot of other LED companies out there that will do what I want it to as well.

Right now I need to get my auto top off system fixed so I don't have to worry about it so much. I've also been buying water from the store instead of using it out of my unit. I need to replace the filters in my RO unit so I can start using my own water.

I bought a couple corals today. This encrusting green montipora... I'm not sure of the species, if someone would like to ID.

And I bought this for $13 as a "frag"

Orange montipora capricornis

FTS

And an almost macro shot of the M. capricornis.... this is as good as I have ever done at manual shooting handheld for a macro shot!

That monti cap is huge for a "frag". I thought you were just messing with me when you texted that pic. Awesome deal.

lol, I was blown away. It's still looking good today.... fingers crossed! I don't kid about deals like that! HAH! Man, I was just thinking - I could frag this thing out and make my money back EASY. lol But, I guess I'll just leave it as a centerpiece for now.

Looks good. Not an all bad macro shot if I do say so.

Thanks man. Nikon D3200 with a 55mm KIT lens, if you can believe that. I've been playing around with my manual settings and I have been learning quite a bit! Apeture, shutter speed, white balance... I think I'm starting to understand a rudamentary form of it for now. IF I just keep toying around with it and keep practicing, I might end up taking some decent shots like some of the guys over on the big forums.

Everything is going well. I'm going to see about going to the store and picking up a 2.5g tank so that I can have some sort of ATO on this tank. Keeping temperature and salinity stable is a big priority for me right now. Most of the water quality is being maintained by 5g water changes at the moment, but I'm thinking about going down to just 3g water changes here next week.

I think I'm going to order some RO unit filters pretty soon so that I can start topping off with my own water and making water for water changes.

So far so good! They are still doing well this morning! lol The last monti that I had was gone by now. Seems like my tank is stabilizing and getting used to the routines. I hope to get by the fish store and get 5g of saltwater for a water change. I am also going to order my RO unit filter while I have the money to do it sometime today or tomorrow. It sucks having to go get water from the store and haul it and get it in the house.

Another thing is that I don't have the PAR bulb directly on the new frags, and they are lower in the tank. I think the intense light was part of the problem the last time - without light acclimation it couldn't take it. The PAR bulb is off to the side right now, and the new frags are doing very well. :D I've been looking for signs of any tissue loss or loss of polyp extension and so far - so good.

Right now my RO/DI is putting off 40ppm TDS. My tap water is right at 500ppm! lol So, it's still filtering out some stuff... but not good enough to put in the tank. I've been using it for my planted tank though. Besides ordering the filters, I think I'm going to order an in-line TDS meter to monitor my TDS and make sure it's all working properly. If I start to see it climb, I can automatically change the filters. I'll be ordering backup filters for the RO Unit this time!!!!

Speaking of topping things off, I have GOT to rig up an ATO system for this tank. I have the stuff to do it with, but I need to figure out where to put the ATO reservoir so that I can get the ATO working again on the tank.

Anyways, that's all for now. Thanks for reading.

Is this a different tank than the one you had the in-tank sump in?

No, this is the same tank with the in-tank sump. Really, you can't even tell that it has an in-tank sump if you look at it from the front. Can't really tell that much if your looking at an angle either. I like the way it turned out. :D

Update... as of this morning, everything was still there and it's all still looking good. Has a nice dark color to both of them, but they aren't browning out because of any phosphate issue - so that's really good. I won't be able to go get any water for a water change today, but I certainly should tomorrow between classes.

I am about to order my RO unit filters and see how much I have left to order the in-line TDS meter.

With all the filter "chambers" and the artery "tubes" that go into and out of an RO Unit, I guess you could think of it as both a heart and kidneys. lol

So i figured out what electrocuted my tank.

Burst heater casing!
The tank was going downhill anyway with the chloramines but this put the nail in the coffin

Worst. Luck. Ever.

Seth. Tough break buddy. I know you will be back up and running a tank eventually. When Saltwater is in your veins...

Very, very bad luck. I don't know why I have had such bad luck in the last few years. I try my hardest, I educate myself, I ask questions and still - things like this happen. It just goes to show that people who know a little about the hobby can still make mistakes and still have bad luck.
