So Confused......

I am so confused as to why my fish keeps dying.
After my accident with nemos (which was caused by me) I left my 16 gal tank with perfect conditions. Confirmed by professional pet shop. I had just 1 chromis (which I had for over a month) and about ten little hermit crabs and snails.
I decided to buy 2 more green chromis two days ago. One of them dropped dead today.
I have the test with chemicals so here are my readings:
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate between 0 and 5.0 ppm (assume after one fished died some time today)
PH is close to 8.0 (if measure from 7.8)
Salinity is 1.0225
What the hell is going on? Should I just quit?

chromis are schooling fish but will kill off the weakest until they get the number THEY want.
Very likley in a 16 gallon tank that number is 2

WOW! Seriously? I thought they are nice peaceful fish. These fish are 3/4 inch long.
All I ultimately want is two little clowns. This fish was recommended in the store, in my research AND on this forum to start with.
I also heard that I must introduce two clowns at the same time because of the dominance issue....???

They are peaceful nice fish, but not necessarily to each other.
