So I finally have this up and going...

This was originally supposed to be my first sized sw tank, but I went bigger almost immediately. In any case I've finally got my little one all set up. It's a 12g nano cube, been cycling for a few weeks using some donations from my established tank. Only inhabitants right now are assorted snails.

Now, one of my first questions before I go any further is that the filtration provided with this particular tank includes:
First compartment - sponges
Second compartment - carbon, ceramic rings and bioballs
Third compartment - return pump (and my heater)
I'm thinking that there has to be a better option?? I've seen some really unique setups using other similar tanks (ie bio cube) but the back and compartments on this are not quite the same. Additionally, I'd kind of like to keep the lid on this tank - it sits on my nightstand and the cat is already quite thrilled he can actually reach this tank. There's no room for a fuge either below or beside this tank, and a hang on really doesn't seem fusible because the tank itself is so small I don't see how one would "fit"? So do I have any other options? If anyone else has this particular tank, I'd love to see what you are using.

You make it sound so simple :) I actually have all those things on hand except for the light. Now I'm wondering if there may be some sort of small water proof (Or should I say salt water proof) light that i can affix under the hood? There's an available space that I could mount it over the second compartment. I really don't want to have to remove the lid of this tank - kind of a big one. My cat has become obsessed with my room since the addition of this tank - with snakes and fish within her reach she is dying to get into something lol. My cat doesn't mind water at all....she wiped out the tank in my daughters room and once went swimming in the cichlid tank. Fish don't even have to be the primary target - plants, or in the case of the nano...snails, really anything that has the slightest movement is enough to get her attention and she wants to play. No lid on that tank would be a disaster - no question about it.

Perfect! I just googled "10 watt submersible light" and found exactly what I needed. You'll find the same light offered on quite a few sites....LOOK AROUND because one offers it significantly less than the others ;)
Thank you so much! Now I just have to wait for it to get here :)
