yes it will help start a cycle, also a piece of a raw shrimp from the grocery store should kickstart a cycle, its gonna be a cycle exactly like you did with your main tank...

A powerhead, a bio-wheel filter, and lots of water changes is usually enough to maintain good water in a Q-Tank.

The water from the display isn't all that useful but that's what I would use. Do water changes on the big tank and use the discarded water for the q tank.
I used to keep a pair of Mollies in the Q-Tank to keep it in good condition. When quaranteening a fish just toss the Mollies into the display tank.

You could use 100% water from the display it would still need to cycle before it would be safe for a fish. The water doesn't hold the bacteria to break down Ammonia. The bacteria live on surfaces like sand & rock. In a Q-Tank the bacteria are on the bio-wheel, filter floss, tank walls, etc. It takes time for the populations to grow.

My LFS service guy came yesterday & I was asking him about the quarantine tank & how you keep the water quality high. Our 100gal tank has a sump, protein skimmer, etc...so I just don't understand how the quar. tank stays healthy without all this stuff. Do other reef tanks NOT have these things & do OK?
Well, he told me that it WAS NOT necessary to quarantine any new fish...he'd put them straight into the tank. He said that there's reef-safe treatments for some fish diseases or parasites. And he said if it's got something they can't treat in the reef tank, they can pull the fish out & treat it separate. I would just have to watch for my water levels if I ever noticed any strange fishy-things until I either treated it or removed the fish to quarantine.
Is this crazy, or is it true? I thought that surely, he would tell me I needed a quar. tank & "hey, by the way, you can buy X X X at the store!" but he didn't say that. Just said he doesn't quar. his fish & it wasn't REALLY as big of a deal as some people make it out to be.
We are more than ready to add fish, but I'm scared to death to hurt something in the tank already (corals, cleaning crew, leathers)...so we don't have any yet!

LOL i can't belive he told you a Qt was not needed, Listen , you have spent alot of money and time gettting your tank to support the life you want, all water spec's measure out , not you put a sick fish in there , there goes your balance, now you put in more chemicals to try to make him and now all your other fish and such better, Your tank is OUT of whack! And you are starting basicly all over! A QT tank would be essential to insure all your time and money was for enjoyment not frustration!
Sorry for the rant, LOL it just bugs me when people take advantage of someones Newness to anything and give them terrible advice!
CrazyZeus1, Sounds like you have common sense telling you something dosen't sound right, GO with that feeling! Ask these folks here, they may differ on some things, But you will always get good info here!
