lets see.... yeah tangs are usually kinda wil fishes they get startled easily.... just give him time.... but deffinately feed some of the frozen formula mine loves it...
i run carbon in mine all the time i buy this stuff called Chemi-Pure supposedly some of the best stuff out there.... they recommend changing it out every 3-4 months.... but i clean out my fluval every 3 weeks.... i also have the bio media in there and some other ceramic hexagon chaped things too.... if your running a regular carbon like black diamond id change it out every 3 weeks but this other stuff swears only every 3-4months and so far its been in there about 2 and everything still looks great and waters perfect..!!!
eggcrate it just plastic grid and u can get it at most depots or something like that... it shouldnt melt at all... yeah and dont use metal since the salts will corrode it after time....
good carbon is supposed to keep your ph constant.... mine stays right between 8.1-8.3
tangs love picking on rocks too thats how they are use to feeding ... grazing off of algae... but the formula will be fine for him...

I wish I had found this place BEFORE I started buying all my stuff. I would have done a few things different.
I'll definitely get the frozen stuff for the Tang. I figure with time he will settle in. I'll have to check next weekend at one of the depots for the egg crate stuff. I'm off to Ohio this weekend to visit my parents. For Fathers Day.
I can't for some reason seem to get my PH above 8.0. But I am using tap water. Guess that might make a difference. I love the Fluval filter. So easy to clean and do maintenance on.
Have you ever had a fire fish? From what I've read they are easy to keep and I'm thinking about making that my next fish. I want a Mandarin really bad but, I know I don't have enough in the tank to keep one of those. What are the pods or whatever everyone in here talks about feeding? How do you get them started? Mandarins are my favorite. I had one in my other tank and loved watching him. They have personality. lol
