Southdown users and critters

It seems that I have read a few posts where, people have had some trouble with hermits or snails (other than conches) that have had some trouble with these guys getting around on the fine southdown sand.
So the question is:
Has there been anyone who has had this trouble?
Sure you can add larger grain size on top of the southdown but have there been any times where you have had to rescue certain critters from sinking or that have bogged down in the fine stuff, you know doing little donuts in the sand? lossed traction?
Just curious

the larger Astrea snail seem to have trouble in it. I've not noticed the hermits having problems but I only have a couple.
Placing coarse material on top is OK but do it very sparingly. It should stay on top all on its own.

I also have not seen a problem with the hermit crabs. I've got 150 of them. The snails on the other hand, sometimes need a little nudge to get them going again.

Noticed the same thing with the larger snails, first time I saw this I thought of the snowman in rudolph the red nosed raindeer, as he was just kind of pushing the snow around the sides of him as he went along.
