Special dog bed...

My dog only has 3 legs. two in the back one in the front. He is also quite old, and hes got joint problems, especially one of his back legs. hes in a lot of pain specifically in the mornings and when getting up from long naps. Im considering getting him a special dog bed... has anyone else gotten their pets a special dog bed? Do you think this is overkill? I mean, the dog would have a better bed than me...

I have not had a dog that needed a "special" bed, BUT I would get her one if she needed it
Do you give him any meds for the pain???

IMO if a dog buddy needs anything when they grow old, they get it. My kitty at 18 years old needed a heating pad to ease his pain, friends laughed at me but he absolutly got it, I even tucked him in at night. So if you can afford it, please do get him anything he needs.
Three legs means he has been hopping on that one leg and really tearing it up, poor baby.

Don't obsess over the concept of "overkill" or "overindulgence."
You can induldge your dog just as much as you want to, and if you think this bed will improve his quality of life and you can afford it, then do it.

We got one of those memory foam beds for us hoping that it will help with my back. It was quite comfortable at first but once it got broke in then I think it made things worse. Personally, it wasn't worth the money IMO. It's in the guest bedroom now and we've got a nice firm mattress that makes things better for me.
And heaven forbid the dog ever peed on it. Then you'd just have a very expensive potty pad.

The only thing I would consider is whether the dog will actually sleep on it. Many pets aren't exactly cooperative when it comes to pet furniture.
You certainly don't need to worry about anyone here thinking about "overindulging". We fish folks spend hundreds of dollars on rocks! LOL Do what you think is best for you and your pet. That is all that matters.

Probably a form topper would works just as well. Probably, better.

I bought a twin mattress for mine because they are to big for any dog bed I find. I commend you for taking care of a special needs dog also. If it were me I would buy it for him even if it was only to improve his life for a month.

I would do virtually anything to keep my pets comfortable. SCSI advising meds and Beth indicating that many pets will not choose to use what bed may help are both correct in my mind. Before you spend money on bedding I would make sure you are doing three things.
1. Give medication for inflammation: Rimadyl or Dermaxx come to mind
2. Give medication for pain: Such are Tramadol
3. Give nutraceuticals: Omega 3/6 fatty acids, glucomaine, chondroitin sulfate and MSM
Continue to help him get up and exercise some. They need to move to keep up muscle mass and keep joints warm/flexible.

I would think that rather than a fancy schmancy mattress what will help the dog most would be something designed so it can get up easier. You might be able to locate a doggy physical therapist who could work with the dog some and come up with a good idea. I know someone who had a dog with arthritis in it's back and they came up with a bed that was a bit higher. They taught it how to roll in and out of the bed so it didn't have to try to get up from a laying position.
