Yes, underwater. Air isn't toxic to sponges but as the water leaves the pores they are filled with air. When you submerge them again some air stayes trapped in the pores. Since sponges are actually a colony of filter feeding animals the area around the air will starve & die. This small area will slowly expand until the entire sponge is dead.
