Sponges are extremely resiliant. If you have good water and enough food then you can dice a sponge any way you want.

.Prob an old thread but why start a new one. Hey Bang Im sure I think Im right cut them under the water?

Some college students did an experiment once and blended a sponge up in a blender. The liquid was dosed in a bunch of different, small tanks and sponged started growing! I can't remember where I read this, but it was from a respectable source.
ps- sponges are resilient everywhere but in my tank :p I am a sponge slayer.

Yes, underwater. Air isn't toxic to sponges but as the water leaves the pores they are filled with air. When you submerge them again some air stayes trapped in the pores. Since sponges are actually a colony of filter feeding animals the area around the air will starve & die. This small area will slowly expand until the entire sponge is dead.
