They should be kept out of the direct light and should recieve good, alternating flow. A powerhead directed at them will not be sufficient. They need an alternating current from something like a wavemaker or a powerhead with an adaptor on it that allows it to spin.
Never expose your sponge to air, even briefly, as it is a death sentence to them. The air gets trapped in the pores and the sponge will slowly rot away. Make sure the pet store knows this as well. Don't not buy a sponge unless you are 100% sure that it has never been taken out of the water.
Be careful with which sponge you decide on. Some are noxious.
I have never had any luck with sponges as they require heavy feeding. I was unable to feed enough without fouling my water. On the other hand, I have seen photos from people that have had huge, beautiful sponges.
