are these star polyps? i got a small frag about 6 months ago and now have a pretty big colony. the base is the exact same color and texture as my gsp's, but the polyps are kind of hairy and have a color somewhere in between a candy cane and a green open brain. i had always thought that they were just a different color gsp, but the little hairs on the polyps and the fact that the base on the colony is getting about 1/2" thick is making me think that they may be something else.

well they look like green star polyps, taste like gsp, smell like gsp so they must be gsp!!! the only real way to tell is to look at the encrusting mat. if it is purple, voila, gsp. if its tan, they can also be gsp, however if it is red, you may have pipe organ on your hands but there wont be a mat, it will be more like a tony skeleton.
p.s. do you have a pic with the regular lights on?
good luck

heres another pic. i never though twice about them not being gsp's until the mat started to get really thick. the metalic green ones i have just have a very thin mat. if mat color is a good way to id then my question has been answered because it is purple.

Hard to tell from the second picture, but the polyps resemble the polyps on my orange pipe organ more so than the polyps on my green star.

the pipe organs i have seen have a rigid tubular base. the base on this is just like my other gsp's but alot thicker.

I have a colony of gsp that look almost identical to what you have. The only difference between mine and yours is that up that close you can see tiny hairs on the fingers. The mat is a purple-pink corraline algae color (very light purple and more pink). The gsp I have are on a 10lb rock and when fully open resemble a head of hair more than anything else. From all the other gsp I have seen these seem to have finer individual polyps and fingers.

You know what now that I go back and scrutinize the picture a little better I do see the tiny hairs on each finger. Same exact gsp as I have.

gsp, can have many different morphs, and im positive this is one of them. if the mat is purple and rubbery, then is gsp, but definately a morph of some kind! cool though!
good lcuk

I had some thin stalk xenia that looked pretty similar as well. Like Jon and Bang Guy said a pic of it closed up would make identification easier.

Hey Jon,
Lets see... a 29gl FO/q-tine, 40 breeder growout tank, 30 breeder over a 40 breeder for a propagation unit a 120 reef (new) and a 125 display.
Currently I am propagating 17 different kinds of coral. The mother colonies (except for 1 leather and the xenia) all are in the display. The frags start in the propagation unit and what doesn't sell/trade right away (after healing/attaching) is moved for grow out to the 40 breeder that is set up just like a mini reef. From there I try to sell/trade the pieces (sm/md/lg).
