Starting a 40 gallon reef.. lighting question

Hey everyone I could really use your input... Came across a 40 gallon breeder and was gonna set up my 4th reef tank. Question is, would an outer orbit metal halide fixture 342 total watts be overkill? And if so could I use a 70 watt bulb instead of a 150? I

It's my understanding that you have to use the correct bulbs, so NO...you can not put different watt bulbs in a unit made for certain wattage...
 
with a 40G though, you can get a good T5HO set

Thanks for the info... I have a t5 on my 20 long frag tank and everything just grows slower than i expected.... I am really curious if the 8.42 watts per gallon from the outer orbit fixture is too much for the shallowness of the 40 breeder?
