Hello-
Any "magical" liquid additive suggestions to stimulate hard coral growth without promoting undersirable algae growth and do these products actually work ?

just good lighting..good calcium and alk......good water quality...and thats all you can do
I add coral vite, coral accel, iodine, stongitum(sp), and clacium but this is only because i don't do water changes
i add 5 ml of the coral vite and accel eery 2 weeks
5 ml of iodine every week
10 ml of strongitum every week
5-15ml of B-Ionic daily..depending on the calcium level

So far there are no magic potions although Dr. Holmes-Farley believes he has invented one. His sounds promising to me.
For now, Quality light, pristine water and appropriate feeding seems to grow corals best.
Most of the accelerator products I've seen actually slow growth, especially Iodine and Strontium.

Strontium: actually bang guy...from what i have read it doesn't slow down growth it seems to strenglthen the skeleton of the coral...therefore appearing to grow less because all the growth is somewhat denser and not as "spread out"...so it seems smaller yet is getting stronger inside
but, i agree with you not all of this is "for sure" and some believe it slows down calcification not speeds it up...but i think if you add it so it mantians the levels found on the reef it helps the overall health of the coral and does not make the weaker corals found in some aquariums...(specially true for sps and lps corals)
Iodine: the effect of iodine has not yet been 100% confirmed...but it seems to helps such corals as xenia, but can react negitivily with such corals as clavularia and pachyclavularia......i suggest adding Kents Time release Iodine (its a relitively new formula) instead of such things as Lugol's which is a little to strong for the tank
But again stick with the basics like calcium and alk.......sometimes "less is more"

Just expressing my opinion :)
I should have stated that clearer for sure.
We do agree than normal NSW levels will never harm our reef environment.

Kip,
I never heard about "landscape bricks for rock" I guess I do not read enough posts... (how many bricks per gallon?) Are bob and gregvabch friends? just kidding... I hope newcomers are smart enough to ignore some of this bad information.

i once had bricks in my tank. i'll admit that! i bought 120 lbs of hawaiian base rock off ---- for a total of about 220 shipped. and am currently saving up for 50 lbs of live rock from this site.. but yeah.. bricks in a reef tank are not very pleasing to the eye

OMG!!

Anyway all i've added to my tank until recently was Kent Tech CB. Once I added some turbo snails and naris. snails to kill off the algae, the corraline started growing like mad.
