I think it may be a some kind of mullosk???
it will open & close on the top, and it moves itself in & out of the rocks ********

Very interesting for sure. If its moving than its definately not a barnacle. It could be a kind of bivalve but the shell is very different from what I've seen before. I think your right in it being a mollusc but as to what family I'm not sure. Bang is usually good with invert ideas, maybe the thread will catch his eye.
