New saltwater tank owner. I have a stressed foxface. Any suggestions? I'm keeping lights off. Water tests are all normal. Keeping children away from the tank.

What size tank is he in? Is it a new fish? List prams. List tank mates. Do you have any hiding places? Post picture.

56 gal 2 clownfish (false percula) 1 yellow butterfly. 1 choc chip starfish. 1 flaming scallop. 2 Astraea snails. And then there were 2 strawberry crabs and a hermit crab that hitchhiked in on the live rocks. We have 2 filters running - one UV , one reg. I can get a pic when I get home in like half hour. I don't know what other info you would need. I'll test salinity and give you that when I get home. We just acclimated & put him into tank last night so he's been in less than 24 hours. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track to calm him down.

Fake plants, 2 live rocks, a little cave thing. So I think hiding places are accessible. He's hiding behind a fake grassy looking plant.

Foxfaces fade or turn dark when frighten or stressed. Moving him to new home is all that and more. Give him a couple of days and see if there is change. Give him a clip of nori this will help.

He also needs swimming tank mates when I got mine he hid all the time then slowly adding swimming tank mates made him come out how big is he? mine is about 4 1/2 in now just to let you know they are very skiderish anyway turning color is a defense to blend into his surrounding so even if he's looks bad he's ok they are very hardy

Thank you all for your replies. The fish is hiding in such a way I can't get a pic of him. My husband is bringing nori home on way back from work tonight so we will see what that does. The butterfly fish is very active so maybe they will eventually become swimming buddies.

The color thing always gets people. It got me. They darken when stressed or just when the tank is dark. There a hardy fish. If it's a new arrival just give um a few days and should come around

Right after I posted my original question, he started calming down. He and a butterfly fish became swimming buddies. Then his buddy came down with ich. We removed the butterfly & put in a hospital tank. So foxface went into a depression I think. Turned "ugly" most of the day. Stayed in the corner of the tank. Only "pretty" and swimming when he's fed his nori. We just put his fully recovered butterfly buddy back in tank tonight. Hopefully he will perk up. On a separate note - I have never seen a "happier" fish than this butterfly coming back to his home tank. He's swimming and turning and really enjoying being back. Such personality!
