sump for 75 gallon

I think my biggest problem as of right now, is the sump
tank. I have the tank on hold right now at my LFS but the thing is, I
have a canister filter which is a good one but usually for sump tanks, one
would use a filter that is inside of it, in water. I want the sump tank
for various items such as; heater, skimmer, filtration, etc. Thing is, I have a
glass tank and unless I drill a hole in the back of the display tank, I
will need a over flow tank attached to the display tank and have a suction
hose going from that to the sump and then from sump to display. Should I
try to avoid the procedure of having a overflow tank and get a hole
drilled into the back of my tank? what are your thoughts on this? and
what are your thoughts on having a canister filter and no filter in the
sump tank. thanks for all your help

Drill 3 holes and do this:

If you have a sump, you don't need a filter at all. I do find a micron filter bag that your overflows can flow into(changed weekly) worth doing though, it essentially asks as a filter. Do you plan on getting a protein skimmer? Thats a must IMO.

great pic. Do you mind explaining why there are three valves as apposed to two? And what are your thoughts of my filtration prob.

yah def. getting a skimmer. Would it hurt at all to have my canister filter run into the display or is that too much filtration going on because I will be running a FOWLR. So the live rock will also help but not as much as it normally would because I am doing half live rock half dead rock.

thanks for that link. I read the bio on it and it looks like something I might be interested in doing. The bio did not touch on where the three standpipes should be going into the sump. I had an idea of maybe the Emergency and full siphon standpipes should be headed into the sump section of where the micron filter bag should be that you were talking about. And the open channel should be coming from the sump section of where the skimmer is, back up to the overflow section of the display tank.

Those 3 don't cover the return coming up from the sump. You'll need another hole for that or pipe something over the edge. As to where to plumb it into your sump, that depends on what the sump looks like and if theres a refugium or not.

ok. that makes a little more sense. I take it that the return does not go back into the calfo overflow. I will drill an additional hole right under the calfo overflow box and have the return go there. How does a refugium play into this procedure? The sump that I have on hold is a three compartmental box. It has a micron filter bag in the first compartment, a section for the bio balls and a section for a inset filter or skimmer, etc. thanks for taking time to help me out on this. big help!

A Pic would help, but without seeing it I think all the water from the overflows should be going into the area with the bioballs. You can remove the bioballs though(as they can require tedious cleaning or become nitrate farms) and replace them with a filter sock. The key thing is you don't want any air bubbles from your overflows getting to the area where your return pump is.

im getting the holes drilled into the tank today. I will post some pics of it after it is done. I think the holes will be an inch and a half though, rather than an inch wide. I think im going to get the three holes just like the pic shown above and two holes for the return. Man, Im going to have a holy tank!
