Wow sorry I just thought of this. You are using a pump for the influent to your sump/ refug and a pump for the return. If this is true WHAT happens if your return pump fails.

Where did you get that Joe? Looks to me like she is siphoning direct to the fuge, no overflow. What did I miss?

nope boys, just siphoning from the display to the sump/fuge. in the pic my siphon and return are next to a powerhead if thats what caused the confusion.
looking at my setup tho i am worried that in a power outage my sump should be fine for over flow but im worried i will pump too much back into the dt when the pump kicks back on.

Good pick up and a very real possability also if you loose your syphon how do you restart it

thats why i like the ball valves! to restart the siphon you close the valve, pop off the top of your influent plumbing and fill it with water, replace the top of the plumbing and set the siphon back into the tank and open up your ball valve. voila! the water above the valve falls when the ball valves opens and sucks water back into the siphon. no sucking, no mess!

Great if you are home to do it. What happens if you are out and the power goes off for a few then back on?

right. the hope then would be that i put my return pump into the sump shallow enough that it will drain the sump down to below its intake before flooding the tank. i intitially had the return pump laying on the bottom of the sump. i have since moved it quite high on the side.

Sorry IMO not good enough. Running a pump with no water is at the least a burned up pump at worst a fire hazard.

yes i agree. aqaurium125g has been pretty convincing in selling me on an overflow box. i will probably go that route but itll be a couple weeks at least.
