t-5 vs PC

No comparison between the two at all. The key with T-5 are using good reflectors, and more important individual reflectors. With the fixtures with a single reflector, your losing a lot of light.
Not my info, but taken from another site. Here are PAR #'s of 54w T-5's. I'd love for someone to show me a PC bulb do half that.

Yep,....Yamaha Racer-correct? You don't have to convince me, I've seen too many tanks with SPS and clams not to believe. Something I've never seen with PC's. What bulbs are you using in your set up. I thought you said you had 128 watts?

yep yamaha racer....are u the same? but i did the wrong calculations i had 5x28w helios but they are crap and go out alot and now i have 4 so its 112watts, but they are individual reflectors. i had 2 daylight 10k and 3 actinic but 1 daylights went out like 2 weeks ago but luckily i just ordered my tek hood

I thought that this was a joke at first, but a guy at a fish store I went to out of town said that LEDs had just come out, but cost around $2500 for the 36" model. :scared: :scared:
He said they were supposed to beat the crap out of MH.
Anyone have any info on these new LEDs?

about having t-5 over pc.....yes i would've done that if i knew back then more about this hobby..
but overall i rather VHO's than both of them !!
because they are easy to use easy to go....great life span, great costs and URI bulbs have great color...of course that is if you are using MH and want to have them as a complenment
i am buying an ice cap retrofut VHO and 5 MH250

for my 400 G proyect !!!

You can have a crocea with PCs. I have had one for over a year. I have 195W on a 20 and all othe corals are doing fine.

I know I'm jumping in a bit late on this topic but I just went through this entire odeal about 5 months ago.
I went the PC route to begin with and outgrew that within a month when I realized that you aren't going to do much other than softies.
Naturally I was on the MH bandwagon but I didn't want the extra cost of chillers and all that jazz. So I decided to check out the T5s. Two people I knew, including my LFS used them and I was amazed at the polyp extension of the SPS. After looking at the cost, size of equipment and the low temperature considerations it really was a no brainer. I can say that I'll never go back after having a few months of trial. A lot of people want to compare 200watts PC to 200watts T5. No comparison. When you talk T5 you need to just throw the old 4 watts per gallon rule right out the window.
Now for the guy who said the T5s looked dimmer than the PCs? I'd say the only way you would see that was brand new PC bulbs and almost dead T5 bulbs. I switched mine right away and the light difference was immediately noticable.
MHO...T5s are the best when you consider the other factors. Unlimited space and more importantly money? Then of course MH. But if you want to do anything in your tank without breaking the bank, T5 is the answer.
BTW...I have a crocea in my sandbed with my T5s and it absolutely loves them.

Thanks for the #'s Coach, that should definitively answer the question of which is better by far and away. Are those based off 65w PC's?
