Hello all, i have finally decided to join the nano reef community
. I have a new 29 gallon biocube and want to know the best and most cost effective way to go about getting it running. Please help me out!! Thanks

well, i plan on doing a reef tank and i already have salt and every thing needed because of all my other tanks. So i havent started the cycle because i want it to be perfect and wanted to know the best kind of sand to use.

WELL...I personally used a mixture of aragonite, and live sand in my 225...IMO the consistancy is good for anytihng that likes sand (like my ray)....
IDK how deep you want your sand bed, but I have read that you can just use a little bit of live sand to seed the other sand....and of coursed your LR will also help

That's up to you....IMO it should be fine. I have 4" in the 225....1 - 1 1/2 in my 29...and 1" in my 54g
I am thinking of getting some more for the 54....maybe for the 29 too....

Yeah i think that is what i will do. Has anyone heard of the marc weiss product that supposedly cycles your tank in 2 days?

Oh, and BTW, like Meowzer said, I think a 50/50 mix of LS and Aragonite makes a good mixture. Accomodates most all of our little creatures.

Oh, and it is not only for cycling. It gives your tank a big boost for de-nitrificating bacteria and what not. Does anyone recommend a refugium or anything. I want to keep a clam and a brain, is this possible?

if you upgrade the lights you can keep the clam im sure. the brain im sure you can keep. refugium is the best IMO

What should i do with the filter, should i use the biocube cartriges. How would i go about a nano refugium. Also, could i keep a clam neer the top.

I have read that the biocube filter is subpar. So, I went out and bought some charcoal, put it into a little filter baggy and put that over the bioballs. That way you get extra filtration and you won't mess up the flow of the biocube filter and you won't mess up the bioballs. I really didn't want to spend another 30 bucks for the protein filter sold seperately.
I have also seen people on here go out and buy filter media that you can cut and they just ripped out the biocube filter paper and put that in it instead of having to pay for a whole new filter each time. So, you save money.
