How long would it take a tang to out grow a 55g? I am going to get a bigger tank in the future. I was wondering if I would get a tang and raise it in my 55g and when I get a bigger tank move him to that. Just wondering it’s no big deal if the answers no I just think tangs are nice fish.

I had a yellow tang in a 55 for about 1 1/2 years, he was a juvi (I think) when I got him. He grew super fast and outgrew the tank within the 1st year. IMO a small juvi could be okay in a 55 for a short time.

Tangs are very diverse. You need to state a specie before you can get a real answer. A Kole may never outgrow a 55. A Naso could outgrow it in 3 months.
I've heard this question a lot and I'll tell you my experience. You may think you're going to get a bigger tank in a year but in reality this usually doesn't happen.

I was just wondering. I would get a tang unless I had a set date for a bigger tank. My father in-law builds tanks and I could get one from him any time. I was just wondering about the smaller tang. Yellow and some that stay about that size.

I've had my yellow tang for a year in a 75. He hasn't gotten much bigger if at all. Still at about 2".
In fact, the only things I have that I can actually tell have grown are my eels. My niger has grown a little bit...had him for about a year, too.

IMO and IME, tangs dont grow in small tanks. That can be a good think for a short time but in long term i think this will cause health problems

I just think that they are cool but I'll just wait until I get a bigger tank. Thanks for the info all!

i think tangs (and most large fish) grow slower in small tanks...my hippo tang only grew about an inch in the 2yrs he was in my 55gal. in the past eight months in the 125gal he's grown another inch (7" now) and "bulked up" a bit, the same happened with my boxfish.
also both fish look much better in the larger tank....tangs need large tanks IMO

mike thats just your choise. if you want then buy but dont forget they wont grow like they do in bigger tanks and this will probably cause lots of health problems but not immediately

I have a different take on that but my opinion fits in well with yours. I believe Tangs grow slower when they are stressed. Placing them in a smaller tank is going to cause significant stress.
