tank cycle question

I set up my tank two nights ago.. there is live sand, yesterday we put in some liverock, and some hermitcrabs... I checked the ammonia, wanted to make sure that it was starting to go up, so that the cycle would begin, but its right around 0.00 0.25.. is that normal for only being three days into the tank??? should it be higher then that???

If the live rock was cured then that can happen. Nothing wrong with that either. If it were me I'd start feeding the tank a small pinch of food daily to keep the bacteria population healthy. Don't let ammonia climb above 0.5ppm though.

I guess what I meant is , since the tank is 3 days old. shouldnt I have a huge spike of ammonia to start the nitrites??? thats what I'm asking, not sure if I'm asking it correctly.

What banguy is saying is that if your LR is cured, you may not have a spike in anything because there's no die-off. If the LR is uncured, you should have a higher spike in ammonia.
If your LR was cured, you should put a pinch of flake food in daily to get the cycle going, because the tank probably won't cycle if the LR is cured. The food will decompose and create an ammonia spike, thus kicking off your cycle.
Also, i hope you plan on losing those hermit crabs... they don't do well in a cycle...

Thanks, I didnt buy the hermit crabs, my husband came home with them yesterday from the store .. he bought them with the live rock, and the guy there told him that you could use them to kick off the cycle. I was mad at him for believing the guy but have also found that online...

Don't expect a huge spike in Ammonia. My 29g barely got above .25 The nitrites on the other hand were off the chart on the 6th day and back down to 0 on the 12th day. Used live sand and base rock, 3 damsels as a source of ammonia (poop and pee) although I don't recommend using livestock to cycle. Keep us posted on your progress, parameters etc. Good luck..

I've never heard of using hermies to start a cycle... they eat waste... I've heard of using damsels to kick off the cycle, but it's kinda cruel. We try to promote using uncured LR, or fish flake food to start the cycle. :joy:
It's also my understanding that inverts (such as hermies) won't tolerate high levels of ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites... but i'm not sure, as i've only had them after my tank was fully cycled, and i haven't had any spikes in ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites after i added them... I'd see if you could possibly return them, though. Having living animals in the tank during cycling is like you being in a room with no ventalation, and having to breath in nail polish remover for 4 weeks... it burns their lungs and guills.

you can't always believe the LFS, because most of the time they're just trying to make a sale. you know, the best LFS i found was in the middle of nowhere in this old warehouse. The place looked like crap, but they had the best help, best fish, and best systems i've ever seen! you could tell they were trying to appeal to the serious aquarists. If you can find a LFS like that (one where you know they're not trying to just get your money), you'd be golden! Even if they charge more, it's worth it in the long run to get expensive healty fish & corals than inexpensive sick ones.

Wow, i've gone totally off topic. I gott learn to keep my replies short, quick, and to the point!

Keep the goal in mind. The goal is to produce stable colonies of bacteria for biological filtration. You don't need, nor want, a high ammonia spike to do this. A small amount of ammonia is just as effective and it won't kill off the critters in your rock & sand.
