Imo I would not worry about a glass top and gas exchange im sure your glass top is not airtight and in your size tank I would imagine you have a good size sump which is not covered

im guessing in usa terms a sump is a filter in uk terms if so yeah i got a filter but not an insane one..
its a fluval filter i think its a 306
i'm planning on getting an insain filter once moved and settled in and keep using the fluval too can never have to much filtration.
im gonna learn for a couple of months to possibly make my own a nice big one im quite handy at making things.
but i do like to view other people's top view of tank to give me good ideas ive seen a few nice tops in pics forum

A sump is not a filter. A sump is a place to keep all of your equipment so that it does not have to be seen by onlookers. a sump wouldnt be viewable from the top of an aquarium beings its directly under it in most cases.

Wouldn't there still be gas exchange in the tank even with a sump or refugium? I think it all depends on surface area, right? I would be worried about the lights heating things up through the glass. At least, that's what I've read. That, and the glass reflects light and doesn't allow the same level of penetration...

Um no a sump is a filter of sorts...... It just happens to be under your tank or in another room. Water from ur tank runs down into another tank where there can be tons of different things such as live rock, bio balls, live sand, algae, etc... Then the water is returned up to ur tank.... as for gas exchange in there, yes there is. Then a glass top wouldnt be a prob. Like i said earlier i have had a glass top for over a year on my nano and it has been fine. BUT thats only because i dont have a light on legs like the picture above.... Then i will either use nothing or egg crate. One of the draw backs to a glass top is that algae, and salt creep can form on the glass.

There still is gas exchange, but also there are lights on the sumps too. But heat is a prob, mine tends to run hot.... BUT with stronger lights there is always going to be a heat problem.

little off topic but what kind of stand r u using ecooper
The stand (legs) for the lights came with it (Aqualight Pro) and the stand for the aquarium is whatever comes with tanks at *****. Sorry, hate to give ***** any props, but it was a great buy (the tank was free with purchase of stand and canopy - or maybe it was the canopy was free? I can't remember, but it was a good deal based on what I had compared it to). It's a 75g set-up.
And, I do like it. Take care!

is the stand cheeply built and look like it could break or is it pretty sturdy
Lights: stand is plastic, but I think pretty sturdy. The lighting system is kind of bulky but not too heavy.
Aquarium Stand: looks fine to me. It's wood (not particle board like the stands you put together) and was already built. Seems sturdy to me. It's been set up since August of 06.
