Tap water in marine aquarium

Is it ok to test my new tank for leaks with tap water?

I don't wanna wait a week for my RO/DI unit

Goddamn the piping on this Aqua one 400 kept leaking. Have fixed it with silicone gel though!

Just out of curiosity as far as tap water was your concern that there may be copper in your water and it will be absorbed by the silicone and leach back into your tank at sometime ?

Oh well not that specifically, but my concern was the plastic piping would somehow absorb impurities from the water and leech it back out over time. I thought this highly unlikely but wanted to be sure.

Actually they will but with just a couple/few fills with tap water to test for leaks the amount adsorbed is so low that's it's unlikely to leach back out.

It's the steady weekly addition of tap water over months/years that will cause problems.
