I'm 22, so I think I've got a decent prospective on both sides.
In my view, it doesn't matter so much that they're teens. It's the first age period that will be the worst drivers. If you want to raise the limit to __ age, they will then become the worst drivers. Move the license age requirement to 20 years old. In say 10 years or so, everyone would complain they need to raise the limit even futher. Could you image a bunch of drunk frat guys getting behind the wheel for the first time?
Most would wrap their car around a tree probably within the first week.
IMO, the age limit is good. I had a job at 17 so I needed a car by then. One of the most frustating things in the world for me, is when a sitution is 'over-corrected' and people are injusticed from the actions of other morons. What the real issue is, the horrible fashion in which teens (or anyone in this case) are tested and given licenses. At least here in Florida, take a 3-hour fluff course and pass the computer tests, you get a permit. Pass the 'parking' lot test and you get a license. WHAT?!?! Driving is a privilege, not a right. We need to see if someone is truly incapable of driving. A basic road test for a permit, and a 'true' all inclusive road test, highway, city, parking, etc, for a full license. Then, strictier policies for teens that have repetitive accidents (their fault), get tickets, etc. Basically, take up the slack where bad parents missed with theirs kids, for whatever reason, couldn't teach, didn't want to, etc, or weed those that simply lack the ability to drive off the road and not endangering the lives of those who can.
