It has nothing to do with experiance in sailing. It has everything to do with age. At 16, she can not protect herself. you think just because she is on the water, she cant be kidnaped and or killed.
what about pirates, and yes there are still modern day pirates, that would use her and then sell her or dump her. she has to stop for supplies some time, some where. no way

So what happens in a year when its time to drive and be normal like every other 16 year old?

I guess I am an over protective mother, there is no way on Gods Green Earth, I would let my 16 daughter, or son for that matter, sail alone around the world. I have a hard time letting my 15 yr old go to a movie with a friend.
Its not that I dont trust my child, I dont trust other people.

Like an 18, 25, 35 year old female would be any different? Or for that matter a couple of guys out sailing coming across pirates?
NO WAY in heck would I let my daughter do it -- but I respect the freedom of them having the choice of doing it. They know the risks. The last thing I want is a world full of noes instead of yeses. At 16 with knowing how to sail she has the skill to do it. Now the 7 year old pilot that crashed -- wow just thinking of my niece flying scares the hell out of me.
#1 rule of risk assessment is there is always some level of risk.

.
Exactly. Thats why I see issues with it. How do you stop her at the age of 18 when she is an adult anyway?

I think way too much is being made of this. If the girl has the experience and desire more power to her. My stepdad's parents were 14 and 15 when they got married and had two kids before the wife's 17th birthday. AND THEY WERE FROM OHIO, I would have figured the south

Our culture is really pretty closed minded compared to the rest of the world on what's accepted and what's not.

I'm glad everyone has posted their point of views.....that is kinda the point....we all have OUR OWN ideas and thoughts....doesn't make yours more right then mine though

Some of you have toddlers, and some of your don't have children yet....I just wonder how your point of view will change on things when you are the one sending YOUR child out into this sicko world.....
It really is scary....BUT I KNOW we all have to do it...

My kid is active duty military. It really wasn't that weird sending him off to war. I put my trust in his commanders to train him tight. I just hope it wasn't misplaced
It really didn't change my perception of how much responsibility you can hand a kid. Some kids are able to handle a whole lot more than adults give them credit for.
Now if I had a daughter...........;

She is more likely to be killed and raped walking home from school, than encounter pirates.

You know what the sad part about that statement is....the fact that is it too true :(

Nope. None of mine would be going. When they're 18 they are legally free to take whatever risks they want. We, as a society, have picked 18 to be an adult.

I heard some stuff about the family of this girl on the radio this morning. Apparantely the father is broke and has been trying to sell the a reality show which someone finally picked up. He wants to show how kids need to get out and do things. He has 7 children that are all homeschooled and neighbors say that you hardly ever see or hear from any of them. The family reminds me so much of the balloon boy family. Sounds like the kids are just being exploited for financial reasons.

That's why we should stick to the "18 rule".
I've also heard some parents say their kids are SOOOO mature for their age.... then you see them away from their parents when they think an adult isn't watching. Kids are kids... period. Don't trust them to show you their immature side. They are a crafty little bunch of mongrels.

sooooo crafty!! And so much "stuff" now to help them. My daughter has friends that I would trust with my life. Then there are some (18 yrs) that I wouldn't let in my house. She is not really close friends, but the stuff she tells me about them is super scarey. Some even have the nerve to leave the state with friends after their parents allow them to "spend the weekend" at a friends lake house with parents. HAHAHAHA....... I think some of the parents are so stupid and lazy. Easier to say yes to obnoxious child than to stand your ground as a parent
